GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Redshirt sophomore
Ellie Wolski raced to a first-place finish in the women's 5000-meters, as the Coastal Carolina men's and women's track & field teams combined to total 10 personal-best marks on day one of the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational on Friday in Gainesville, Fla.
Women's Team
Wolski turned in a time of 16:59.98 to cross the finish line first overall in the women's 5000-meter run. Her time is a personal-best mark and the ninth-fastest time in CCU's outdoor all-time performance list.
Also posting personal-best records on Friday were sprinters
Kayla Sweeney (23.66),
Sydney Clemens (24.73), and
Lauren Gordon (24.84) in the 200-meter dash, while hurdler
Alexis Glasco set a new personal-best time of 58.36 in the 400-meter hurdles.
Sweeney's time of 23.66 in the 200-meters marks the sixth-best time on CCU's all-time performance list, while Glasco's time of 58.36 is the third-best time in the school's history.
On top of Wolski's win and Glasco's 19th-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles, the Chants'
Keiran Martin placed 14th in the women's long jump event with a leap of 5.56 meters, while
Lauralyn Clifford finished 18th in the women's hammer throw with a mark of 49.40 meters.
Running for Nike, professional and former Chant
Melissa Jefferson crossed the finish line in first place with a time of 23.02 (1.8) in the women's 200-meter dash Olympic Development event.
Men's Team
On the men's side, the Chants also recorded five personal-best marks on Friday, highlighted by
Ethan Blackwelder and his runner-up finish in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase with a personal-best time of 9:42.14.
Fellow distance runner
Trey Kraimer posted a personal-best time of 3:56.37 in the 1500-meter run, while in the 200-meter dash, both
Garrett Wilkins (21.23) and
Deondre Hardy (21.58) turned in new personal-best marks.
CCU's
Michael Martello turned in a personal-best distance of 47.01 meters in the men's hammer throw, placing 17th overall and one spot in front of fellow Chant
Killian Oberheu and his mark of 38.91 meters.
Also picking up top-20 finishes on Friday for the Men in Teal was
George Werner Jr. (10:17.52) with a third-place finish in the men's 3000-meter steeplechase and
Tyler Graves (51.50) with an 18th-place showing in the 400-meter hurdles.
Senior
Aaron Keeler finished 14th overall in the men's javelin throw with a distance of 47.72 meters, while Hardy placed 19th in the men's long jump event with a leap of 6.87 meters.
The Chanticleers will be back in action for day two of the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational tomorrow starting at 9 a.m. ET.
