Chanticleer Netters Fall to Troy in Regular-Season Finale

Men’s tennis will next be in action at the SBC Championship Tournament

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team took an early 1-0 match lead with the doubles point but was unable to build on the lead in a 4-1 Sun Belt Conference loss at home to the Troy Trojans on Sunday afternoon at the Stevens Tennis Complex.

The loss dropped CCU to 10-12 overall and 1-7 in Sun Belt play, while with the win, the Trojans moved to 17-6 overall and 4-4 in league action.

Despite the Trojans scoring a 6-1 win on court No. 1 in doubles play, the home-standing Chanticleers fought valiantly on the other two courts to pick up the doubles point.

CCU's duo of Maj Tomac and Guilherme Toresan downed Troy's team of Francisco Erramuspe and Mario Martinez 6-2 on court No. 2, while the tandem of Carlos Berna Ruiz and Ryuya Ata capped the doubles action with a 6-3 win over Vito Llianres and Noah Martens on court No. 3.

However, the Men in Teal were unable to build on the 1-0 match lead, as Toresan was forced to retire due to an injury in his singles match on court No. 3 to allow the Trojans to tie the match up at 1-1.

Troy continued its winning ways with a pair of straight-set wins on courts No. 4 and 5 to pull out in front at 3-1 with three matches still on the courts.

The next contest would end in the Trojans' favor, as a 7-6 (7-4), 6-1 win on court No. 2 sealed the 4-1 win for the visitors.

When the match was decided, CCU's Berna Ruiz was up 3-6, 6-2, 2-1 on court No. 1 over Martinez, while Steve Mundt was in a battle on court No. 6 at 2-6, 5-3 with Erramuspe.

The Chanticleers will now set their sights on the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Men's Tennis Championships held in Peachtree City, Ga., starting on Wednesday, April 19.
