BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. – The Coastal Carolina University men's golf team shot a 21-over 309 to finish the first round of the Mountaineer Invitational on Monday in eighth place at the Pete Dye Golf Club in Bridgeport, W.Va.
Wintery weather conditions caused slow play all day, which forced the second round to be suspended due to darkness and will be completed Tuesday morning before the start of the third and final round.
Owen Kim led the Chants in the first round with a two-over 76 (37-39). He was three-over in the first nine holes before running off eight pars on his next nine holes. He finished the opening round tied for 20th.
Connor Newton shot a five-over 77 (37-40) and is tied for 27th, while
Seth Taylor (37-41) and
Trey Crenshaw (35-43) finished tied for 34th at six-over.
Garrett Cooper (41-39) shot an opening round 80 and is tied for 47th.
Alex van Wyk (37-33) is playing as an individual and is tied for 56th.
Oklahoma State holds the lead after one completed round of play after carding a 13-over 301. Host West Virginia is only one shot back at 14-over 302, with Marshall and VCU tied for third after carding a 15-over 303. Drexel and JMU completed the opening round tied for fifth at 17-over 305.
Western Carolina (+19, 307) sits two strokes ahead of the Chanticleers (+21, 309), with St. John's +23, 311) and UT Martin (+26, 314) rounding out the top 10.
The rest of the field includes William and Mary (+28, 316), Xavier (+29, 317), and Maryland (+35, 323).
Tuesday's action is scheduled to tee off at 9 a.m. ET. The completion of the second round will begin the day's action, followed by the third and final round.
