No. 8/10 Chants, Cougars to Meet on Wednesday Night at 6 p.m. ET

Game was pushed back a day to accommodate travel issues had by CofC

CONWAY, S.C. – No. 8/10 Coastal Carolina and College of Charleston will play on Wednesday, April 19, at Springs Brooks Stadium. The first pitch is set for 6 p.m. ET.
 
The two teams had to adjust the schedule due to unforeseen travel issues with the College of Charleston following their Colonial Athletic Association series at Monmouth last weekend, April 14-16.

ABOUT THE CHANTS
• Coastal Carolina is 23-11 overall and 11-4 in Sun Belt Conference play this year.
• Coastal sits alone atop the Sun Belt Conference regular-season standings at 11-4, one game in front of both Southern Miss (10-5) and Louisiana (10-5).
• CCU has won nine of its last 13 games and is coming off a 2-1 series sweep on the road at Old Dominion last weekend (April 14-16).
• The Chanticleers wrapped up their second five-game road trip of the season going 3-2 overall, posting a 1-1 split with two midweek games at then-No. 14 Campbell (April 10-11) and taking two of three games in SBC play at Old Dominion (April 14-16).
• As a team, the Chants are hitting .317 overall, which leads the Sun Belt and ranks 12th nationally, as nine different players are hitting over .300 on the season.
• The offense is also first in the Sun Belt in average (.317), runs (331), scoring (9.7), doubles (90), hits (384), RBIs (278), hit-by-pitch (79), slugging percentage (.556), and on-base percentage (.423).
• CCU's pitching staff has struck out 382 batters compared to just 169 walks on the year and leads the Sun Belt with an average of 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings, which also ranks sixth nationally.
 
 
ABOUT THE COUGARS
• College of Charleston enters the week of play at 22-13 overall and 12-6 in Colonial Athletic Association play.
• The Cougars are tied for the most conference wins in the CAA with Elon (12-5) but are tied for third in the regular-season standings in winning percentage at .667 in league play.
• CofC has won four straight games entering play this week, as well as six of its last seven games following a five-game losing streak to end the month of March and start April.
• The Cougars' offense is hitting just .277 on the season and has driven in only 197 RBIs overall for the year.
• However, they have won with pitching, as Charleston's pitching staff has posted a 4.17 ERA and held opponents to just 19 home runs and a batting average of only .248 on the season.
 
 
ALL-TIME SERIES HISTORY WITH CHARLESTON
• In what has been a regional rivalry since 1996, the Chanticleers and Cougars are tied at 26-26 in the all-time series.
• In fact, the two teams have split the last 10 games at 5-5 overall, with the Cougars winning the first matchup between the two teams this year in Mt. Pleasant, S.C., back on Feb. 28.
• Coastal Carolina is 18-9 at home versus the Charleston Cougars.
 

RANK'EM
• For the first time this season, the Chanticleers were ranked in a national top-25 poll on March 27.
• Coastal came in at No. 19 in the D1Baseball Top 25 Rankings and at No. 28 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) NCAA Division I poll in that poll on March 27.
• Since then, the Chants have been in at least one national poll in each of the last four weeks.
• In the most recent polls that came out on April 17, the Chants were in all six polls - No. 8 (Baseball America), No. 10 (D1Baseball), No. 13 (USA TODAY Sports coaches poll), No. 13 (NCBWA), No. 16 (Perfect Game), and No. 29 (Collegiate Baseball).
• Coastal's No. 8 ranking by Baseball America and No. 10 ranking by D1Baseball marks the first time the Chants have been in the top 10 in a national top-25 poll since being ranked as high as No. 10 twice by Collegiate Baseball News in 2019 and No. 9 overall in the USA Today SPORTS Preseason Coaches Poll in 2017.
• Since being ranked, the Chanticleers have gone 9-4 overall.
 
 
POTW SHARKEY
• Coastal Carolina junior pitcher Teddy Sharkey was one of 11 NCAA Division I baseball student-athletes to be named a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week powered by Diamond Sports for his play last week, April 10-16.
• Sharkey was nearly unhittable in his two outings, going 1-0 with a save for the Chants, who went 3-2 overall on the week.
• The CCU closer pitched 6.0-scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out 13 hitters.
• The honor marks the second consecutive week that a Chanticleer has been recognized by Collegiate Baseball, as Graham Brown was named a National Player of the Week last week.
 
 
COMMON FOES
• Outside of playing each other once this season back on Feb. 28, the Chanticleers and Cougars have played one common foe this far this year in the Clemson Tigers.
• Coastal suffered a 16-6 loss to the Tigers on April 4, while CofC went 0-2 versus the Tigers with a 4-3 loss at Clemson on March 14 and a 10-3 loss to the Tigers in Columbia, S.C., on March 28.
 
 
AVOIDING A SEASON FIRST
• This season, the Chanticleers have not lost two games to the same team all season long.
• Coastal's 11 losses have come to 11 different teams, one of which was the College of Charleston in midweek play on the road back on Feb. 28.
 
 
OUTSIDE OF THE BELT
• This season, the Chanticleers are 12-7 overall in non-conference play.
• The Chants have two midweek wins over ranked foes Campbell (March 14 and April 11), and one each over ranked opponents Wake Forest (March 7) and North Carolina (March 28), as well as a three-game series sweep over Davidson (March 3-5) and a series win over Creighton (Feb. 24-26).
• CCU and Illinois (March 10 & 11) also split a series 1-1, which saw the rubber match washed out.
 
 
HOME. SWEET. HOME.
• This season, Coastal is scheduled to play 34 home games versus teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference, Big Ten, Big East, Conference USA, Atlantic 10, and the new look Sun Belt Conference.
• In fact, 14 of the Chants' first 15 games came at home at "The Palace" to start the season.
• Since 2000, the Chants have recorded 20 wins or more at home in all but four years, one of which was the shortened 2020 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
• Since Coastal joined the Sun Belt Conference in 2017, the Chants have posted a record of 135-63-2 (68 percent) at home at Springs Brooks Stadium.
 
 
ON DECK
• On deck for the Chants is a three-game series at home versus Southern Miss on Friday-Sunday, April 21-23.
• The two teams have never played each other on the baseball diamond.
• However, the series will be pivotal as first place in the Sun Belt Conference regular-season standings will be on the line as Coastal leads the league at 11-4, while Southern Miss is tied for second with Louisiana at 10-5 in conference play.
