ATLANTA – In what was a highly-competitive match from start to finish, the Coastal Carolina men's tennis team fell 5-2 on the road at Georgia State in Sun Belt Conference play on Sunday afternoon.
The Panthers took a 1-0 lead early with the doubles point.
GSU's duo of Roberts Grinvalds and Gabriele Datei defeated CCU's team of
Steve Mundt and
Lucas Wayenburg 6-2 on court No. 1, while the Panthers' squad of Edward Tymes and Harrison Kim held off Coastal's pair of
Ryuya Ata and
Guilherme Toresan 6-3 on court No. 3.
The match on court No. 2 was all locked up at 4-4 when the point was decided.
In singles play, the Chants scored wins on courts No. 2 and 6 yet fell in each of the other four bouts to drop the match 5-2.
Coastal's
Jesus Garcia won in straight sets 6-4, 6-4 over Kim on court No. 6, while fellow Chant
Maj Tomac beat Grinvalds 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 in three sets on court No. 2.
In two of the four losses, the Chants took the Panthers to three sets, as
Neil O'Connor lost in a third-set tiebreaker 4-6, 7-5, 7-6 on court No. 5, while on court No. 3, Ata was defeated by the score of 6-7 (8-10), 7-5, 6-4.
The Chanticleers (10-7, 1-2 SBC) will continue their four-match road trip at Georgia Southern on Monday, April 3, in Statesboro, Ga., at 1 p.m. ET.
