CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team won 20-10 over ASUN Conference newcomer Queens University at Brooks Stadium on the campus of Coastal Carolina University on Senior Day. Following the win, the Chanticleers honored a combined 10 seniors and graduates who played in the final home game of their CCU careers.
The win improved Coastal to 11-6 overall and 4-3 in league play, while the Royals fell to 9-7 on the year and 4-3 in ASUN action with the win.
Coastal Carolina's
Sydney McClure (3 goals, 3 assists),
Kayla Downey (3 goals, 2 assists),
Avery McIlwaine (3 goals, 1 assist), and
Maddie Bates (3 goals) led the offensive attack with hat tricks, while
Riley Glackin added two goal for the Chanticleers and six different Chants, including
Jordan Gertz, filled the back of the net once. It was the first career goal for Gertz, who played four years on the CCU defense.
Defensively, the Chants'
Claire Martell made six saves in goal while facing 23 shots, while the defense pressured the visitors into 12 turnovers.
Queens was paced by Elise Grissett with three goals, while Kayleen Favreau and Karsyn Sadler tallied two goals each.
Defensively, the Royals' Sharn Muffett allowed 11 goals and made five saves in over 41 minutes of action, while Caroline Kraemer allowed nine goals and made two saves in her 18 minutes between the pipes.
The opening period belonged to host Coastal, as the Chanticleers raced out to a 10-0 lead in the first 15 minutes of action highlighted by two goals each by McIlwaine, McClure, and Glackin.
In the second quarter, the visiting Royals finally tallied their first goal of the day, as Favreau scooped up a teammate's missed shot and fired a shot by the CCU defense to stop the running clock with 12:16 left in the second period. Just one minute later, Queens' Maura O'Donoghue cut the Chanticleers lead to eight at 10-2.

Avery Snyder and Downey sandwiched a Royals goal to put the Chants back in front by nine at 12-3 with 8:14 remaining until the halftime break. Coastal closed the second quarter with a 4-1 run to increase its lead to 15-4 on goals by Downey, Bates, Gertz, and McClure.
To start the third period, Queens stopped the running clock with the first two goals of the second half with a woman-up and a woman-down goals to trail 15-6. Coastal's
Monica Manley started the running clock back up with a 10-goal advantage minutes later with her 22nd tally of the season.
However, Queens was able to stop the running clock temporarily at 1:57 as Donovan was able to find the back of the net with a free-position goal to trail 16-7. Coastal's Bates needed just 14 seconds expiring from the game clock to start the running clock for the third time to push the lead to 17-7.
With 15 minutes of action left to play, Queens' Grissett scored her second goal of the day with just 1:13 expiring from the game clock to trail 17-8, only to see Coastal's Downey record her 50th goal of the season to push the CCU lead back out to 10 at 18-8.
After a Favreau goal cut the deficit to nine at 18-9, McIlwaine and Downey put the Women in Teal in front 20-9 with back-to-back goals with 2:40 remaining in regulation. As the clock wound down for Queens, Grissett found the back of the net with 29 seconds to play for the final margin of 20-10.
For the game, the Chanticleers won the draw control battle 24-7, which allowed them to outshoot the Royals 37-23.
Coastal will return to action at the 2023 ASUN Women's Lacrosse Championship, as the Chanticleers will travel to Jacksonville, Fla., on May 3-6.
