Chants Shut Out Troy in Series Finale

Volpe pitched her first complete-game shutout of the season

Troy, Ala. – The Coastal Carolina softball team (29-12) shut out the Troy Trojans, 4-0 in the final game of its three-game SBC series on Friday in Troy, Ala., to complete the series with a 2-1 loss.

No runs were scored in the opening three innings and CCU's starting pitcher Mady Volpe refused to give up a single hit while pitching two three-up, three-down innings. The Chants were able to record three singles in the first three innings, two of which came off Riley Zana's bat and the third from Maddy Jennings but the score remained at 0-0.

The Chants struck first in the top of the fourth inning after back-to-back singles from Abbey Montoya and Indya Smith put runners on first and second base. Senior Diamond Williams then rose to the occasion and smashed a two-run double to right field to give CCU a 2-0 lead. Coastal then pushed ahead when Zana crushed an RBI double down the left-field line to drive in Williams from second base to extend CCU's lead to 3-0.

Troy was not going to go down without a fight when two walks and a single to left-center field from Ashley Thomson loaded the bases for the Trojans but Zana stopped them in their tracks after making a diving play to secure the third out to keep the score at 3-0.

CCU delivered the final blow in the top of the sixth inning after Montoya kicked off the inning with a single down the left-field line. The graduate student then stole second base and was able to reach home off a Troy fielding error to give Coastal a 4-0 win.

Volpe had an excellent game in the circle, pitching four 1-2-3 innings while striking out six hitters and giving up just one hit in her first complete-game shutout of the season.

The Chanticleers will be back at St. John Stadium next weekend for a three-game Sun Belt Series against Marshall, April 14-16.
