Coastal’s duo made an impact in their first year as Chants
TUCSON, Ariz. – Coastal Carolina had not one but two freshmen named to the 2023 Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-American team, powered by Diamond Sports, in Caden Bodine and Blake Barthol.
The duo are the first Chants to pick up freshman All-America honors since Cooper Weiss in 2020 and the 14th and 15th to receive national recognition in program history.
Caden Bodine
Named the 2023 Sun Belt Conference Freshman of the Year, Bodine also earned a spot on the All-Sun Belt first team and was named to the NCAA Conway All-Regional team for his play at the Regional tournament.
Bodine was second on the team with a .367 batting average on the season, as he totaled 79 hits over 215 at-bats. He recorded 11 home runs, one triple, 17 doubles, 47 RBIs, and scored 65 runs on the year while posting a .609 slugging percentage and a .456 on-base percentage.
His 11 home runs were tied with Daniel Bowman (2009) for the most by a freshman in Coastal history.
The first-year catcher was tied for the team lead with five sacrifice flies and was one of the toughest players to strike out in all of NCAA Division I baseball, striking out just 21 times over 215 at-bats in 56 games.
Behind the plate, Bodine totaled 356 putouts and 45 assists on the season, while throwing out 16 would-be base stealers.
Bodine capped his freshman season by hitting .458 (11-for-24) with two home runs, a triple, seven RBIs, and eight runs scored with a .792 slugging percentage over five games in the NCAA Conway Regional to pick up all-tournament team honors.
Blake Barthol
Taking over the third base position early in the season, Barthol finished his first year in the Teal and Black hitting .308 with 49 base hits. He posted seven home runs, a team-high four triples, 13 doubles, 32 RBIs, and scored 41 runs on the season while playing in 52 games.
Barthol recorded a .572 slugging percentage and a .424 on-base percentage, while also totaling four sacrifice files and three sacrifice bunts. He also was 4-for-6 in stolen bases on the season.
The first-year Chant closed out his first season in Conway hitting .294 (5-for-17) with five walks, a sacrifice bunt, four runs scored, a stolen base, and some great defense on the hot corner in CCU's five games at the Conway Regional.
