CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday afternoon, as the Chanticleers fell to the visiting Charlotte 49ers 3-0 at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
The loss drops CCU to 1-1 on the season, while the win pushes Charlotte to 1-2 on the year.
The visiting 49ers were the aggressors, as they outshot the Chants 16-1 for the match. They also held a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks and more than doubled up the Chants in fouls at 15-7.
Coastal goalkeeper
Vivienne Carr suffered the loss in goal, as the junior made seven saves while facing 16 shots.
The lone shot for the Chants came from sophomore
Julia Ziegenfuss in the 31st minute as the home team looked to get on the scoreboard.
Charlotte picked up one goal each from Payton Patrick, Tash Hudson, and Ayanna Parker, while Reagan Burns and Lea Wissell each tallied an assist in the win.
The match started out as a physical contest, as the two teams combined for six fouls and one yellow card in the first 15 minutes of play.
That's when the tide of the match turned, as the 49ers notched back-to-back goals by Patrick (15:29) and Hudson (16:30) in just over a minute of play to quickly take a 2-0 lead.
The 49ers kept the pressure on the Chants' defense, as Carr recorded three saves over the next 12 minutes of action before the visitors added to their lead with a goal from Parker (28:31) in the 29th minute to extend the lead to 3-0.
Refusing to give up, Carr picked up another stop between the pipes in the 30th minute while Ziegenfuss put a shot just off target less than a minute later.
The second half started much like the first, as Charlotte fired two quick shots in the first 12 minutes of play, only to see Carr come up with a pair of big saves to keep the score as is.
Coastal was able to settle in and kept the 49ers' offense at bay over the final 75 minutes of play; however, the Chants were unable to get any type of offensive attack going in the second half.
The Chanticleers will continue their three-match home stand on Sunday, Aug. 27, versus the College of Charleston. The opening kick is set for 6 p.m. ET.
