Chants Shut Out CofC at Home Under the Lights

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team shut out the College of Charleston Cougars 2-0 in a battle under the lights at the CCU Soccer Stadium on Sunday night.

A two-and-a-half-hour lightning delay did not phase the Chants as they netted two goals to secure their second win of the season versus the Cougars.

The win advanced Coastal to 2-1 on the season and dropped CofC to 0-2-1.

It was a physical game from the first kick with Cougars leading the Chants 7-6 in fouls while picking up two yellow cards to Coastal's one.

The Chants and CofC went shot-for-shot in the opening period with each team taking three shots but the Chants looked the more threatening side leading in corners 3-1.

CCU challenged the Cougars keeper with two shots on goal in the first half both came from freshman Emily Petring's boot in the 9th and 17th minute, but neither could make their way to the back of the net.

The Chanticleers immediately threatened the Cougar's defense in the second half taking three consecutive shots in the 50th minute all of which were deflected off the bodies of CofC players to keep the score at 0-0.

Less than a minute later sophomore Tamlyn Parkes drew a foul in the penalty area to send Natalie Yoo up to the spot. Yoo then buried the ball into the bottom left corner to put the Chants up 1-0.

It remained a very physical match in the second frame with the Cougars leading CCU 10-5 in fouls with two Chants picking up yellows.

CofC put constant pressure on the Chants as the half continued taking nine shots while forcing CCU's keeper Vivienne Carr to make six crucial saves to keep the score at 1-0.

The Chants were able to secure the win in the 82nd minute when Parkes drove down the left sideline and pinged the ball to the front post where Petring was waiting to net the second goal to give CCU the 2-0 win.

The Chanticleers will be back in action versus North Dakota State on Aug. 31 at the CCU Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
