Women’s Soccer Edged by NDSU Bison

CONWAY, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team was edged 1-0 by the North Dakota State Bison at the CCU Soccer Stadium on Thursday night.

With the loss, the Chants fall to 2-2 on the season and the NDSU Bison advance to 2-2-1.

The Chants dominated from the first kick with freshman Emily Petring firing a shot on goal in the opening 15 seconds of the match, which was followed by a shot from Julia Ziegenfuss just one minute later.

In the 33rd minute, the Chants looked to get on the scoreboard when a long ball clearance from Cami Wiles landed at the feet of Petring to set up a one-v-one attack, but NDSU keeper Abbey Wilkinson was able to dismiss the threat.

NDSU had a chance of its own in the 44th minute when Ave Stanchina shot on goal from the six-yard box but Coastal's keeper Vivienne Carr reacted quickly to deflect the ball and keep the score at 0-0.

CCU was the clear aggressor in the opening half leading the Bison 8-2 in shots and 4-0 in corner kicks, while the Bison led 4-1 in saves.

The Bison were first to strike in the second frame when a loose ball from a corner fell at Amaya Garrett's feet, and she did not hesitate to drill the ball into the bottom left corner to give NDSU a 1-0 lead.

Junior Gianna Irungaray had Coastal's most promising chance in the 73rd minute when her deflected shot from the edge of the box was met by a brilliant save from the NDSU keeper.

The Chants kept knocking on the door when shots from Casey O'Connor and Petring in the 79th and 80th minutes, respectively, each hit the target but were met by the safe hands of NDSU's Wilkinson.

The Bison picked up the lone yellow card of the night in the 88th minute but were ultimately able to hold on to the 1-0 victory.

The Chanticleers will hit the road for their first away contest of the year when they will face No. 13 South Carolina. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. ET.
