Women’s Soccer Drops Sunday Match at No. 13 South Carolina

CONWAY, S.C.- The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team suffered a 5-0 defeat to the No. 13 South Carolina Gamecocks in its first away contest of the season on Sunday night.

With the loss, the Chants fell to 2-3 on the year while the Gamecocks maintained their undefeated record and advanced 5-0-1.

The Chants were overpowered by the Gamecocks in the matchup with USC taking 27 shots while denying CCU a single shot-taking opportunity.

USC got on the scoreboard in the fourth minute of action when Catherine Barry netted the first goal of the night off an assist from Shae O'Rourke to put USC up 1-0.

In the following 25 minutes, the Gamecocks continued to apply pressure in an attempt to bag an insurance goal. They took 12 shots but Coastal's keeper Vivienne Carr made seven saves to keep the score at 1-0.

However, the CCU defense was unable to hold off the attacking threats of USC as Barry scored her second goal of the night from an assist by Brianna Barr in the 30th minute to extend the Gamecocks' lead to 2-0.

USC notched one more goal with just three minutes left to play in the half when Lily Render found the back of the net from an assist by Megan Spiehs to make the score 3-0.

The Gamecocks added two more goals to its total in the second frame off goals from Bri Pinasco and Shae O'Rourke to confirm the 5-0 victory.

Carr fell to 2-3 on the season in goal but made a career-high 10 saves in the match.

The Chanticleers will return to the field on Sept. 7 as they take on UNC Greensboro on the road at 6 p.m. ET.
