Men’s Soccer Downed by Furman Paladins

CONWAY, S.C. –  The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team fell to the Furman Paladins 3-0 at the CCU Soccer Stadium on Monday night.

The Paladins put the pressure on the Chants in the opening 15 minutes, taking five shots while forcing Coastal keeper Alex Hare to make three saves.

The momentum switched to the Chants in the following 10 minutes with Coastal taking four shots while denying the Paladins of a shooting opportunity.

In the 22nd minute, sophomore Djavid Abdullatif had a promising chance on goal when his shot was narrowly kept out by an outstretched leg of Furman's keeper Aaron Salinas to keep the score at 0-0.

The Paladins were first to get on the scoreboard in the 29th minute on a throw-in set piece that was initiated by Lloyd Wamu Snell. He launched the ball in from the sideline to the feet of Alfredo Diaz-Santillian, whose shot took a deflection off his teammate Callum Allison to give Furman a 1-0 lead.

The Chants looked to equalize in the 41st minute when Ewan Gordon headed the ball on goal off a corner set play but it was met by the hands of Salinas to hold the score at 1-0.

At the end of the first period, the Chants trailed 9-6 in shots but led 2-1 in corner kicks.

The Paladins wasted no time to extend their lead in the second frame when Dylan Lane netted his first goal of the night in the 51st minute off an assist from Caleb Johnson to make the score 2-0.

Disaster struck for the Chants in the 60th minute when Evan Howard received a red card, reducing Coastal to 10 men for the remaining 30 minutes of play.

Just five minutes later, Furman's Lane bagged his second goal of the night off an assist from Diaz-Santillian to push the Paladins out in front at 3-0.

CCU's Louis Bock and Christian Cook each put shots on frame in the 68th and 75th minutes, respectively, but this ultimately wasn't enough to recover from the 3-0 deficit.

The Chanticleers will hit the road to commence Sun Belt Conference play versus the Georgia Southern Eagles on Sept. 15. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. ET.
