STATESBORO, GA – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team had to settle for a 0-0 draw versus the Georgia Southern Eagles in its Sun Belt Conference opener on Friday night.
With the tie, Coastal sits on a 2-3-1, 0-0-1 Sun Belt record while the Eagles are 1-3-2, 0-0-1 Sun Belt.
Sophomore
Eythor Kjartansson was Coastal's most threatening player in the opening 20 minutes of action taking a shot in the 3
rd minute and forcing the Eagles' keeper to make a save in the 19
th.
Coastal looked the more attacking side for the remainder of the half taking three more shots while refusing to let the Eagles fire a single shot of their own.
At halftime, the Chants led 5-1 in shots, putting two on frame, while leading 2-1 in corner kicks.
Doug Hainer drilled the first shot of the second period in the 48
th minute but it was met by the body of an Eagles defender to demise the threat.
Georgia Southern looked to answer back with a chance of its own in the 51
st minute when Jack Ireland took aim on goal but it was met by the hands of
Kilian Vallant to hold the score at 0-0.
CCU took two more shots in the 61
st and 66
th minute but both were blocked away by the Eagles defense to extinguish any hope for the Chants.
Georgia Southern Mauro Gutierrez kept peppering the target in the second frame forcing Vallant to make saves in the 72
nd, 76
th, and 84
th minute while the Chants failed to make another shot attempt in the period.
While the Eagles outshot Coastal 6-3 in the second half, neither team could find a way to reach the back of the net resulting in a 0-0 tie.
The Chanticleers will return to the CCU Soccer Stadium on Sept. 19 to play UNCG at 7 p.m. ET.
