CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team dropped its Sun Belt Conference opener to the Old Dominion Monarchs 1-0 on Friday night at the CCU Soccer Stadium.
With the loss, the Chants fall to 3-5-0, 0-1 Sun Belt while the Monarchs advance to 6-0-2, 1-0 Sun Belt.
The Monarchs dominated in the first 20 minutes taking four shots with one on goal while the Chants were denied of a shooting opportunity.
In the 21
st minute, CCU had a promising chance on goal when
Taylor Tolson crossed the ball to
Sarah Soraghan at the back post but her shot was blocked away by the ODU defense to hold the score at 0-0.
In the remainder of the half, ODU took four shots, forcing a
Vivienne Carr save in the 44
th minute while Coastal's
Gianna Irungary and
Julia Ziegenfuss each took a shot in the 22
nd and 27
th minute, respectively, but both failed to challenge the ODU keeper.
At the end of the first frame, ODU led 8-3 in shots and 3-2 in corner kicks.
There were few shooting opportunities in the first 20 minutes of the second period with ODU taking two shots while CCU's Irungary fired off frame in the 49
th minute.
ODU scored the game's lone goal in the 68
th minute when Anessa Arndt's shot from outside the box took a deflection off
Maggie Mace and slipped past Carr to put the Monarchs up 1-0.
Coastal took two more shots on the evening but neither threatened the ODU defense, allowing the Monarchs to secure the 1-0 victory.
With the loss, Carr dropped to 3-5-0 on the season while making five saves off 14 shots.
The Chanticleers will be back at the CCU Soccer Stadium on Sept. 20 to face Appalachian State at 7 p.m. ET.
