Women’s Soccer Plays to a 1-1 Draw versus App State

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw versus the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Wednesday night.

With the draw, the Chants are now 3-5-1, 0-1-1 Sun Belt while the Mountaineers sit on a 4-3-2, 1-0-1 Sun Belt record.

In the opening 25 minutes of the first half, the Mountaineers took five shots, one of which was met by the safe hands of Coastal keeper Vivienne Carr and another from a goal-line clearance from Sarah Soraghan. The Chants took three shots of their own, two came off Tamlyn Parkes' boot and the other off Taylor Tolson's, but all were fired off frame to hold the score at 0-0.

In the 28th minute of action, Natalie Yoo was taken down just outside the area, which set up an excellent freekick scoring opportunity for the Chants. Junior Lou Martinet then lined up behind the ball and curled it over the wall and into the back of the net to give CCU a 1-0 lead.

App State took three more shots in the remaining 15 minutes of the first frame, but none startled the CCU defense. CCU's Emily Petring ripped the ball to the bottom right corner in the 36th minute but the Mountaineers' keeper took care of the danger to keep the score a 1-0.

At the end of the first period, the Mountaineers led 8-5 in shots and 6-2 in corner kicks while the Chants led 2-1 in saves.

App State was the clear aggressor in the second frame, taking eight shots to Coastal's one in the first 17 minutes of play, but the CCU defense held strong to hang onto its 1-0 lead.

In the 75th minute, App State's Summer Bowman netted what she thought would be the equalizing goal, but it was overturned due to her roughness with Carr resulting in a Coastal freekick and for play to continue at 1-0.

With just eight minutes left to play, App State's Shannon Studer fed the ball to Bowman, who buried the ball into the back of the net to level the score at 1-1.

The Mountaineers looked to capture a last-minute win when Stephanie Barbosa's shot was blocked away with just 10 seconds left on the clock, but the Chants were able to hold on to a 1-1 draw.

The Chanticleers will hit the road to seek their first Sun Belt Conference win against the Georgia State Panthers in Sept. 24. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. ET.
