CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team was swept by the North Carolina Tar Heels of the Atlantic Coast Conference on Sunday afternoon in Chapel Hill, N.C. With the loss, the Chanticleers moved to 5-7 on the year and UNC improved to 6-3.
Coastal's offense was led by
Jasmine Rivest with nine kills and
Jalyn Stout with seven put downs.
Cagla Bengi finished with a team-high of 11 assists.
Defensively, Coastal tallied 12 blocks as Rivest totaled four blocks on the front line. Freshman libero
Sydney Lewis tallied 10 digs.
The Tar Heels were led by Mabrey Shaffmaster while 15 kills with Sadie Swift and Emani' Foster had eight kills each. Anita Babic tallied 36 assists. Maddy May finished with 13 digs for UNC.
The opening set saw both teams go back-and-forth with the score deadlocked at 9-9 before a 6-3 spurt by the Tar Heels helped them to take a 15-12 lead at the media timeout, highlighted by a pair of kills by
Agata Lesiak. After trading the next few rallies, UNC forced the Chanticleers to call their first timeout of the set with a small 2-0 surge to lead 19-15.
Coastal used a 7-3 burst to trail 23-22 and force the Tar Heels to call their first timeout, sparked by a Lesiak spike and capped off by a service ace by
Dilara Unal. UNC claimed the first set 25-23 to lead 1-0 in the match.
In the second set, both teams remained even at 7-7 before North Carolina had a 3-0 spurt to lead 10-7. Coastal battled back to trail 10-9 after back-to-back errors by the Tar Heels and kept it close by trading the next eight points, highlighted by three spikes by Rivest.
The homestanding Tar Heels opened a seven-point advantage at 21-14 with a 7-1 run that included the media timeout and a called timeout by the Chants. CCU answered with a 7-1 burst of its own to trail 22-21, highlighted by a pair of service aces by Bengi. UNC took a 2-0 match lead with a 3-0 spurt to win the second set 25-21.
In the third and final set, North Carolina forced the Chants to call an early timeout after jumping out to a 7-3 advantage. Coastal battled back to trail 11-8 that included a pair of kills by Stout. The Tar Heels asserted themselves with a 9-4 burst and forced CCU to take its final timeout of the set trailing 20-12. UNC claimed the match at 3-0 with a 5-2 run for the 25-14 third-set win.
Coastal Carolina will open Sun Belt Conference play on the road with a matchup versus Georgia State in Atlanta, Ga., on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 22-23.
