Men’s Soccer Records a Tie Versus UNCG

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team came back from a 1-0 deficit to secure a 1-1 tie versus UNC Greensboro at the CCU Soccer Stadium on Tuesday night.

With the tie, the Chants post a 2-4-2 record on the season while the Spartans sit a 1-4-3.

UNCG threatened the CCU backline in the sixth minute of action forcing Coastal keeper Kilian Vallant to make a close-range save at the front post to deny the Spartans of taking an early lead.

The Spartans continued to apply pressure in the 14th minute of play when the CCU defense blocked away a shot attempt and Vallant made his second big save of the night. However, in the chaos of trying to clear the loose ball in the box, Asgeir Magnusson took down UNCG's Nabil Homssa to give the Spartans a penalty kick. The third time was the charm for the Spartans when Basile Marc drilled the ball into the bottom right corner from the penalty spot to give UNCG a 1-0 lead.

The Chants appealed for a penalty chance of their own in the 28th minute when Doug Hainer was brought down in the box forcing his shot to fly over the crossbar but the appeal fell on deaf ears and play resumed at 1-0.

CCU looked to equalize in the last minute of play in the first half when Christian Cook whipped the ball into the box and Noe Santos' diving header narrowly missed the mark to keep the score at 1-0.

At the end of the first period, the Spartans led 6-3 in shots and 4-1 in corner kicks while the Chants tripled UNCG's foul count at 6-2.

The Chants leveled the score in the 64th minute when Deryn Armstrong fed the ball to Kari Sigfusson who knocked it along to Hainer who chipped the ball over the UNCG keeper's head to make the score 1-1.

The Spartans took five more shots in the next 20 minutes while refusing to let the Chants take a single shot but the CCU defense was able to hold the score at 1-1.

With just three minutes left to play Armstrong netted what the Chants thought would be the game-winning goal but it was overturned due to a CCU foul moments before the shot was fired to close the match with a 1-1 draw.

"I am very proud of how hard we fought tonight, we played some really good soccer for long periods tonight! We created some great chances and were very unlucky at the end not to get that second goal to win the game tonight," stated head coach Shaun Docking. "All credit to UNC Greensboro, as they are a very good team and were an Elite 8 NCAA tournament team last year, so I am really proud of our young group and the progress that we are making right now!"
