Coastal Falls in the Coastal Carolina Tournament Finale

Volleyball to travel to Maryland on Sept. 8-9

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team dropped the Coastal Carolina Tournament finale 3-1 to the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday afternoon at CCU's HTC Center. With the defeat, the Chanticleers dropped to 2-4 on the season, while the Bulldogs improved to 4-2 overall.
 
Coastal was led by Jasmine Rivest with 13 kills while Jalyn Stout recorded her fifth-consecutive double-double with six kills, 16 assists, and 12 digs to lead the attack. Lauren Malone added five kills on the afternoon.
 
Defensively, Coastal tallied nine blocks as DiLara Unal had a team-high five blocks, while Rivest and Valentina Varani each tallied four blocks. Sydney Lewis finished with 10 digs to help Stout with keeping the offense in attack mode.
 
The Chanticleers and the Bulldogs opened the match trading the first 20 points to remain even at 10-10, before CCU used a 4-0 burst to put the host team in front at 14-10. After the two teams traded rallies, Coastal increased its lead to 20-14, highlighted by a pair of points by Stout.
 
Coastal claimed the 1-0 match lead with a 5-2 surge to pick up the 25-16 first-set win, sparked by a kill by Agata Lesiak and a put away by Rivest.
 
In the second set, Georgia raced out to an 8-3 advantage, highlighted by a pair of service aces to force the Chants to call their first timeout of the set. After seeing the visitors increase their lead to 10-4, Coastal fought back to trail by three at 11-8, which included a pair of kills by Malone.
 
CCU pulled to within two at 12-10 after a pair of Bulldog miscues only to see UGA use 9-3 run to take a commanding 21-13 advantage just before trading rallies. However, Georgia evened the set at 1-1 after a pair of Chanticleer kills with a 3-0 spurt for the 25-16 second-set win.
 
The third set began like the first as both teams traded the opening 18 points to remain even at 9-9, before the Bulldogs asserted themselves with a 6-1 run to take a 15-10 lead at the media break. After the break, both teams traded rallies as Coastal continued to trail by five at 18-13, highlighted by a pair of UGA mistakes.
 
Georgia increased its advantage to 21-13 with a 3-0 run that forced CCU to call a timeout. Coastal fell behind in the match as the Bulldogs used a 4-1 burst to take a 2-1 match lead with the 25-15 third-set win.
 
In the fourth and final set, Coastal opened with a 3-1 advantage, highlighted by an Alicja Jaryszek kill and block. Georgia fought back with a 4-0 surge to take the lead at 5-3 only to see the Chanticleers respond with a 3-0 burst, which included a pair of kills by Rivest. After a pair of Bulldog points, CCU got a second 3-0 burst in the set by way of UGA mistakes to lead 9-7.
 
With Coastal holding a slim margin, the two squads traded rallies with the Chants maintaining a two-point advantage at 13-11. However, Georgia muscled its way in front at 15-13 with a 4-0 surge to take the match to a media break. Coastal evened the match at 15-15 with a quick pair of points, highlighted by a Stout kill.
 
Both teams battled splitting the next four points to remain tied at 17-17 just to see the Chants fall behind with a pair of miscues to give the Bulldogs a 20-17 lead. After a Coastal timeout, both teams traded rallies with miscues on both sides with Georgia increasing its advantage to 23-19, which forced the Chants to call their final timeout of the set.
 
Coastal fought back to trail by two at 24-22 off three UGA mistakes and forced the visitors to call their own timeout. After the brief break, the Bulldogs claimed the match with a 25-22 fourth-set victory for the 3-1 match win.
 
Coastal Carolina will travel to College Park, Md., on Friday, Sept. 8 to take on the Princeton Tigers and host Maryland Terrapins in the Maryland Tournament. The Chants will hit the court at noon ET versus the Tigers and 6 p.m. ET against the Terrapins.
