Men’s Soccer Upsets No. 12 James Madison

CONWAY, S.C. –  The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team defeated the No. 12 James Madison Dukes 3-2 at the CCU Soccer Stadium on Saturday night.

The Chants were first to get on the scoreboard in the opening frame when Louis Bock drilled the ball into the back of the net off an assist from Doug Hainer in the 18th minute to put CCU up 1-0.

The Dukes answered back in the 22nd minute when Clay Obara netted the second goal of the night by curling the ball directly in from the corner spot to make the score 1-1.

In the 24th minute, JMU took the lead for the first time in the game when Yanis Lelin whipped the ball into the back post to the feet of Demitri Turner, who smashed the ball into the bottom left corner to put the Dukes up 2-1.

In the following 10 minutes, each team took just one shot with CCU's Paolo Roditti forcing a JMU save in the 35th minute.

The Chants equalized in the 39th minute after Kari Sigfusson was taken down in the box to be awarded a penalty kick. Junior Noe Santos then lined up behind the ball and buried it into the bottom left corner to make the score 2-2.

CCU looked to take the lead in the last minute of the first half when Robert Valdimarsson rattled the crossbar but the score held at 2-2.

Both teams recorded six shots and two saves on the first period, and the Chants doubled the Dukes in corner kicks 8-4.

In the opening 15 minutes of the second frame, Coastal led 4-3 in shots and forced two saves to JMU's one.

CCU regained the lead in the 68th minute when Asgeir Magnusson fed the ball to Deryn Armstrong, who made a quick turn and smashed the ball into the bottom right corner to put the Chants up 3-2.

JMU outshot the Chants 9-2 in the remaining 20 minutes of play, which included a woodwork rattling attempt but CCU held strong to secure the 3-2 victory.
The Chanticleers will be back in action on Sept. 30 as they play at Old Dominion.

"I am so proud of our young guys again tonight," said CCU Head Coach Shaun Docking. "When you look at how far we've come so far this season, we have always believed in ourselves and didn't get the results we hoped for early on. But now we feel we are playing very good soccer with great team spirit and camaraderie. We finally got a result that we hugely deserve tonight against a very good James Madison team!

"Our guys thoroughly deserved the result tonight after such a huge effort these past two months. It was a complete squad effort tonight with everybody stepping up and contributing to a great win for our program."
