Ojiako picks up a career-high 16 rebounds

BOONE, N.C. – John Ojiako scored 18 points and grabbed a game and career-high 16 rebounds in picking up his 11th double-double of the season, but it was not enough as the Chants lost at Appalachian State 88-59 Saturday at the Holmes Convocation Center in Sun Belt Conference action.

Ojiako scored his points on nine-of-17 shooting and grabbed eight offensive and defensive rebounds in setting a career-high in rebounds.

Freshman Jacob Meyer also scored 18 points on six-of-11 shooting. He hit all three of his three-point attempts and also hit all three of his free throws.

Kevin Easley and Ian Granja came off the bench to add six points each.

The Chants ran into a hot-shooting Mountaineer team which finished the game shooting 56.3 percent (36-64) from the field and 40 percent (8-20) from on its three-point attempts in moving to 15-4 overall and a Sun Belt Conference best 6-1.

CCU shot 36.2 percent (25-69) from the field and 25.0 percent (4-16). There were not a lot of free throws in the game, but the Chants hit all five of their attempts as CCU moves to 5-13 overall and 2-5 in the Sun Belt Conference.

The Mountaineers were led in scoring by Tre'Von Spillers with 18 points. Donovan Gregory and CJ Huntley added 13 each, while Terence Harcum and Christopher Mantis scored 12. Jordan Marsh added 10 points off the bench.

CCU will be back home for its next two contests, but will have a different game day format. The Chants will host Southern Mississippi on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. ET, instead of the usual SBC format of Thursday-Saturday games. The Chants will then host Georgia State on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. ET.
