MONROE, LA. – The Coastal Carolina women's basketball team had three players score in double figures, but the Chants fell victim to a fourth quarter rally by the ULM Warhawks as Coastal dropped 71-68 decision in Monroe, La., on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Chants fall to 7-15 overall and 1-8 in the conference, while ULM improves to 15-5 on the year and 7-2 in the Sun Belt with the victory.
Coastal's
Deaja Richardson finished with a team-high 17 points with
Makaila Cange and
Arin Freeman adding 16 and 14 points, respectively.
Alancia Ramsey was the game's leading rebounder with 11 rebounds, while Freeman added nine boards. CCU outrebounded the Warhawks 53-41.
Jakayla Johnson scored a game-high 31 points to lead ULM with Sania Wells and Katlyn Manuel adding 15 and 10 points, respectively. Daisha Bradford grabbed a team-high nine rebounds.
Coastal opened the first period with a 15-3 run, sparked by a layup by Cange and topped off by a Richardson layup. The Warhawks answered with an 8-2 spurt to narrow the deficit to 17-11 at the end of the first period.
The Chants scored the first five points of the second quarter to lead 22-11, including
Tiara Abron's first three-pointer of the game. ULM answered with a 5-0 burst to trail 22-16 just to see Coastal Carolina take an 11-point advantage at 27-16 with 3:12 left to play in the second period on Cange's second long-range three-pointer. The Warhawks closed the first half with an 8-2 surge to trail 29-24 at the halftime intermission.
After the Chants opened the second half action with a layup by Richardson, ULM cut the margin to 33-29 with a 5-2 run. CCU increased its lead to 35-29 before the Warhawks took their first lead of the game at 38-37 with a 9-2 spurt. The Chanticleers outscored ULM 6-0 over the final 56 seconds of the third period to lead 43-38, sparked by an old-fashioned three-point play by Freeman and a three-pointer by Cange.
In the fourth, Coastal led 43-42 after a 4-0 burst by ULM before increasing its lead to 57-47 with an 14-5 surge, ignited by a pair of free throws by Richardson and capped off by a Freeman layup. After the two teams traded the next 14 points, the Chanticleers led 64-54 with 3:30 left to play in regulation. However, the Warhawks scored 17 of the game's final 21 points for the 71-68 comeback win.
Coastal Carolina will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 1, as the Chanticleers host the Georgia Southern Eagles. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
