Chants Use Late Goal to Tie with Appalachian State

BOONE, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 tie versus the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Thursday afternoon in Boone, N.C.

With the tie, the Chants post a 5-4-5, 1-1-3 Sun Belt record and the Mountaineers stand at 5-3-4, 2-0-2 Sun Belt.

Appalachian State wasted no time getting on the scoreboard when Izzi Wood netted the first goal of the match in the third minute to give the Mountaineers a 1-0 lead.

The Mountaineers looked to extend their lead in the eighth minute firing of three consecutive shots while forcing one save, but they could not break through to keep the score at 1-0.

In the 32nd minute Jessica Wheeler took Coastal's lone shot on goal of the first frame, but it couldn't make it past App's keeper to hold the deficit at 1-0.

At the end of the first frame App State led 7-2 in shots and

The Chants battled back in the second half when reigning Sun Belt Offensive Player of the Week Eleanor Ashton levelled the score in the 50th minute. The freshman slotted the ball into the bottom right corner off an assist from Yasmin Azar to make the score 1-1.

The Mountaineers regained the lead in the 61st minute when Wood netted her second goal of the match on an assist from Stephanie Barbosa to put App State up 2-1.

Coastal looked to level the score in the 76th minute when Carmen Gutierrez's header was cleared of the Mountaineers goal line to hold the score at 2-1.

With just three minutes left on the clock, Madison Micheletti drew a foul on the edge of the box. Ashton then stepped up and ripped the ball into the top left corner to equalize the score at 2-2.

At the final whistle, App State led 14-6 in shots while the Chants pushed out in front 6-2 in saves.

"Today was always going to be a tough game for us. Coming away to App Is always a difficult challenge, so that paired with change of travel and location plans at the last minute, we had to ask the girls to be flexible and remain focused on the job at hand and this exactly what they did," stated head coach Jo Chubb. "To come from behind twice shows tremendous fight and resilience from our young group. We challenged them to come out and compete in the second half and they did just that and more. Incredibly proud of their efforts and never give up attitude. We are looking forward to now returning home to play in front of Teal nation Sunday."

The Chanticleers will return to the CCU Soccer Complex on Oct. 13 to take on Louisiana at 7 p.m. ET.
