Men’s Soccer Edged by Old Dominion

CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team fell to the Old Dominion Monarchs, 3-2, on Wednesday evening at the CCU Soccer Complex.

With the loss, the Chants fall to 3-8-2, 1-3-2 Sun Belt record while ODU improves to 5-6-2, 1-4-1 Sun Belt on the season.

The Chants looked to get on the scoreboard in the 13th minute when Gudjon Stefansson headed the ball onto Doug Hainer, but his shot was met by the hands of the ODU keeper to keep the score at 0-0.

The Monarchs took the lead in the 20th minute when Andrew Bennett fed the ball to Michael Eberle who then cut the ball back across the face of goal to William Arnesen. Arnesen then belted the ball through Harrison Gough's legs to put ODU up 1-0.

Old Dominion tried to extend its lead in the 25th and 27th minutes, but Gough made two excellent saves to keep the deficit at 1-0.

Coastal answered back in the 29th minute on a corner set piece. Lincoln Ulrich whipped the ball to the head of Evan Howard who then knocked the ball forward to Loed Klaasen. The sophomore found the back of the net to record his first collegiate goal and level the score at 1-1.

In the 37th minute, ODU regained the lead when Marcello Randolf scored a screamer from distance to make the score 2-1.

At the end of the first frame, ODU led 16-3 in shots and each team had one corner a piece.

Coastal equalized in the 55th minute when Jimson St. Louis headed the ball forward to Deryn Armstrong who slotted the ball into the back of the net to get the Chants back in the match at 2-2.

Old Dominion pushed out in front for the second time in the 71st minute when Bennent passed a low corner kick to Evan Watt who fired the ball into the bottom left corner to make the score 3-2.

The Chants had one final attempt in the 80th minute when Hainer lobbed a free kick to Howard, but his shot was dealt with by the ODU keeper to give the Monarchs the 3-2 victory.

The Chanticleers will return to action on Oct. 27 to face Kentucky in Lexington, Ky at 7 p.m. ET.
