Mountaineers Sweep Coastal on Friday

Stout and Lesiak finish with a team-high 11 kills each

BOONE, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina volleyball team was swept 3-0 (25-21, 26-24, 26-24) by the Appalachian State Mountaineers on Friday evening at the Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, N.C.
 
Coastal (8-13, 4-6 SBC) was led by Jalyn Stout and Agata Lesiak as the duo tallied a team-high 11 kills to lead the Chanticleers' offense. Lauren Malone and Emily Fowler finished with six and five kills, respectively. Stout recorded 18 assists while Cagla Bengi totaled eight helpers.
 
Defensively, CCU finished with nine blocks as Dilara Unal stopped seven kill attempts, while Lesiak blocked five attempts at the net. Sydney Lewis finished with a match-high 18 digs, while Stout recorded nine digs.
 
Appalachian State (12-7, 6-2 SBC) was paced by Lulu Ambrose with a match-high 12 kills, with Bella Hutchens, Elise Marchal, and Ava Leahy adding nine kills each. Addison Heidemann finished with a match-high 35 assists.
 
The Mountaineers stopped six Chanticleer kill attempts with Marchal blocking four spikes at the net. Caroline Farthing and Kenady Roper totaled 11 and 10 digs, respectively.
 
In the opening set, Coastal Carolina raced out to a 4-2 advantage, highlighted by the duo of Lesiak and Unal teaming up for back-to-back blocks. App State responded with an 8-3 spurt to take a 10-7 lead before the Chants evened the set at 13-13 with a 6-3 run, which included two kills apiece by Lesiak and Stout.
 
After the two teams traded the next four points to remain even at 15-15, Appalachian State took a 23-18 lead with a second 8-3 burst. Coastal got two quick points as Stout and Unal teamed up for a block and Malone put a kill down only to see the Mountaineers score two of the final three points to win 25-21 in the opening set.
 
Leading the match 1-0, App State began the second set with a 12-5 spurt before the Chants got a 9-1 surge to take a 14-13 lead, highlighted by four kills by Stout. The Mountaineers answered with a 7-2 run to take a four-point advantage at 20-16. A 7-3 burst by the Chanticleers gave CCU a set point at 24-23, ignited by a block by the duo of Lesiak and Unal and capped by an App State miscue, before ASU scored the final three points to take a 2-0 match lead with the second-set win at 26-24.
 
In the final set, Coastal Carolina raced to an 8-2 lead, sparked by Lesiak and Unal teaming up for a block and topped off by a Fowler spike. The two teams traded the next 11 rallies with Coastal maintaining a lead at 13-8. The Chants increase their lead to 20-10 with a 7-2 burst, which included four kills by Lesiak.
 
Appalachian State used a 14-3 burst to take a 24-23 lead and saw the visitors call both of their timeouts of the set. After a Chanticleer point, the Mountaineers finished the sweep with two quick points to win the third set 26-24.
 
Coastal Carolina will return to the friendly confines of the HTC Center for a non-conference matchup with the College of Charleston on Tuesday, Oct. 29, in Conway, S.C. The opening serve is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
