MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The Coastal Carolina men's soccer team recorded a 0-0 shutout tie versus No. 7 West Virginia on Thursday night in Morgantown, W.V.
The tie marks Coastal third clean sheet versus a top-10 opponent this season.
With the tie, the Chants post a 3-9-3, 1-4-3 Sun Belt record while West Virginia is 10-1-5, 5-0-3 Sun Belt on the season.
Transfer Francesco Pagano looked to give Coastal an early lead when he attempted to chip the ball over the WVU keeper's head, but his outstretched arm was able to snatch the ball out of the air to hold the score at 0-0.
Each team took two shots apiece over the next 25 minutes but could not break through to keep the score level at 0-0.
The Mountaineers took charge in the final five minutes of the half, firing off three shots while forcing Coastal keeper Tristan Himes to make two saves to end the half at 0-0.
In the 56th minute, Jason Kemble ripped a long-distance shot-on-goal to try and get the Chants on the board, but it was dealt with swiftly by the WVU keeper to keep the score at 0-0.
Coastal continued to press the WVU defense in the 56th minute when Daniel Reiter crossed the ball to Gudjon Stefansson whose backheel shot was cleared off the goal line to keep the Chants at bay.
WVU flipped the momentum in the remaining 30 minutes of the match, outshooting CCU, 9-1, but the Coastal defense held strong to secure the 0-0 tie.
The Chants will return to the CCU Soccer Complex to close out the regular season versus UCF on Nov. 5 at 7 p.m. ET.
