Stout and Fowler Lead Chants to 3-1 Win Over the Eagles

Stout ties the NCAA mark with 14 triple-doubles in a season
CONWAY, S.C. – Jalyn Stout, and Emily Fowler led the Coastal Carolina volleyball team to a 3-1 (25-22, 18-25, 25-20, 25-17) win over the Sun Belt Conference East Division leader Georgia Southern at the HTC Center in Conway, S.C., on Friday evening. With the win, the Chanticleers improved to 10-13 overall and 5-6 in league action, while the Eagles dropped to 17-3 on the year and 7-2 in SBC play.
Coastal saw Stout finish with a team-high 15 kills, while Fowler (12) added double-digit kills. Emma Van Elslande and Agata Lesiak had seven and six kills, respectively. Stout totaled a team-high 19 assists, while Ava Wallis had 18 helpers.
Defensively, CCU totaled six blocks as Fowler stopped four kill attempts and Lesiak blocked two shots as Stout, Dilara Unal, and Lauren Malone stopped one attempt each at the net. Stout tallied a match-high 18 digs to record her 14th triple-double, tying the NCAA record she set last season as a freshman. Wallis added 15 digs to help the offense back on track, for her first double-double as a Chanticleer.
Georgia Southern was led by Reagan Barth and Jillian, who had 16 and 15 kills, respectively while Paige Powers and Lydia Seymour tallied nine and seven spikes each. Kristen Barrett finished with a match-high 43 assists.
The Eagles stopped just four kill attempts with Seymour making three stops as Powers tallied two blocks, while Ashlyn Lovett totaled a match-high 18 digs, and Barth (13), Barrett (12), and Gray (10) tallied double-digit digs.
In the first set, the two teams traded the first 12 points with Georgia Southern holding a 7-5 advantage before a 3-0 spurt by CCU gave the Chants their first lead at 8-7, highlighted by a kill by Stout. The Eagles responded with a 4-1 run to retake the lead at 11-9. Coastal Carolina answered with a 4-1 burst to jump back in front 13-12, ignited by a service error by GASO and capped by a Stout kill.
After an Eagle point, the Chanticleers opened a three-point advantage at 18-15 with a second 5-2 surge, which included a pair of kills by Lesiak. The Eagles retook the lead with a 4-0 spurt at 19-18 only to see CCU take a 23-20 lead with a 5-1 run, highlighted by kills by Stout and Fowler. The two teams traded the final four rallies with the Chants claiming a three-point 25-22 win to lead the match 1-0.
Coastal Carolina opened a 5-2 lead to begin the second set, sparked by a kill by Fowler and topped by a block by Van Elslande. Georgia Southern evened the set at 5-5 with a 3-0 spurt before the Chants used a 9-5 surge to push in front 14-10, which included a pair of kills by Stout.
The Eagles scored six straight points to go up 16-14. After a Coastal kill, Georgia Southern got a 6-1 run to take a 22-16 lead. CCU's Fowler and Siri Engstrom put down a pair of kills before GASO evened the match at 1-1 with the 25-18 second-set victory.
In the third set, the Chanticleers jumped to a 9-5 lead, highlighted by blocks by Fowler and Malone. The Eagles responded with a 4-0 burst to even the set at 9-9 before Coastal took the lead at 15-9 with six unanswered points, which included kills by Stout and Fowler.
CCU increased its advantage to 20-13 as the two teams traded the next nine rallies before a second 4-0 spurt by the Eagles cut the deficit to three at 20-17. A 5-3 run by the Ladies in Black gave the Chanticleers a 2-1 match lead with the 25-20 third-set win.
In the final set, the two teams traded the first 22 points to remain even at 11-11 only to see Coastal Carolina take a 15-11 advantage with a 4-0 burst, highlighted by a pair of kills by Lesiak. A 4-1 run by Georgia Southern cut the home-standing Chants lead to 16-15 and forced the Chants to call the timeout. After the break, CCU outscored the Eagles 9-2 for the 25-17 fourth-set win to claim the match 3-1.
Coastal Carolina will return to the court in Conway, S.C., as the Chanticleers battle Georgia Southern on Saturday, Nov. 2. The opening serve is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET on Saturday with the match streaming on ESPN+.
