Brooks Scores Season-High 20 Points in Coastal’s 105-43 Win Over Union Commonwealth

Women’s basketball improves to 4-0 on the season

CONWAY, S.C. – Savannah Brooks scored a season-high 20 points and Jaidyn Koerdt added 17 as Coastal Carolina led from start to finish in a 105-43 win against an overmatched Union Commonwealth squad in a non-conference game Friday night at the HTC Center.

Coastal had all 13 players on the roster score, and the Chants hit 100 points for the first time since 2022-23. The win moves Coastal to a perfect 4-0 for the season.

"We had a comfortable lead the whole game, and we did some good things. But games like this can be tough," admitted Coastal head coach Kevin Pederson. "We did not shoot the three-ball well, but we took good shots."

He also had praise for his two leading scorers. "Savannah is as good as anyone I have ever coached. And JK is just a gym rat. She can be one of our best three-point shooter. We need her to shoot the ball like she did tonight."

Brooks, a 5'9" junior guard from Taneytown, Md., who transferred to Coastal from Delaware State, played barely half the game and had her 20 points midway through the third quarter. Koerdt, on the other hand, hit for seven of her points in the final period. She finished 4-of-7 from the three-point line, half of her team's makes from long range. The 5'11" sophomore guard came into the game with just five points on the season.

Anaya Barney hit for nine points, while Alancia Ramsey and Emilia Tenbrock had eight points apiece. Kristin Williams and reserve Martina Lopez each had seven points.

Lopez got seven points in six minutes and was the last of the Chants' 13 players to score. Coastal scored the final 11 points of the contest. Those points included a three-pointer by Koerdt that put Coastal over the 100-point mark. Lopez and Barney added layups to close the scoring.

Coastal shot 40 percent (36-for-89) for the game and hit just 8-of-42 (19 percent) from long range. But there were bright spots in that the Chants made 25-of-34 (74 percent) free throws and caused 49 turnovers by Union. They also won the rebounding comparison by 48-40.

Brooks had seven points to lead Coastal early, as the Chants took a commanding 16-2 advantage and never looked back. She already had 13 points at the half, and Coastal was dominating with a 54-17 halftime lead. The largest lead of the game was reached with the final score.

Coastal will step up to play at N.C. State next Thursday (Nov. 21) before the Chanticleers are back home for games against Coker (Nov. 27) and Jacksonville State (Dec. 7).
