Coastal Falls 89-68 to No. 18 NC State on Thursday

Brooks scores 22 in the first loss of the season

RALEIGH, N.C. – Savannah Brooks scored a season-high 22 points as the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers fell 89-68 to the No. 18 NC State Wolfpack on Thursday evening in Raleigh, N.C. With the loss, the Chanticleers dropped to 4-1 on the year, while the Wolfpack improved to 3-2 on the season.
 
Coastal's Brooks was aided by sophomore Alancia Ramsey with 14 points, while Riley Stack and Jayden Marable tallied eight points each. Brooks was the top rebounder for the Chants with seven boards as Stack and Ramsey grabbed six. Stack finished with three blocks to give the 6-4 center 15 blocks on the season.
 
The No. 18 Wolfpack was paced by Aziaha James with 21 points, while Devyn Quigley (20) and Madison Hayes (18) scored in double figures. Lorena Awou snagged nine rebounds as NC State won the rebound battle 50-31.
 
Coastal led early 5-4 after a three-pointer by Ramsey and a layup by Marable before a 5-0 run gave the Wolfpack a 9-5 advantage. CCU's Brooks cut the to 9-8 with three free throws before a second 5-0 run by NC State increased the lead to 14-8. The two teams traded three three-pointers with the Chanticleers trailing 17-14 with 5:11 remaining on the game clock. The Wolfpack closed the first period with a 6-3 run to lead 23-17 at the end of the first 10 minutes of action.
 
In the second quarter, the Chanticleers cut the lead to 28-26 with a 9-5 run, sparked by a pair of free throws by Brooks and capped off by a jumper by Brooks. A 12-3 burst by NC State increased the lead to 40-29 with 3:37 left to play in the first half. With 2:42 remaining until halftime, CCU cut the Wolfpack lead to 40-32 before State scored seven unanswered to lead 47-32. The Chants' Marable and Brooks scored the final points in the first half with Coastal trailing 47-36 at the intermission.
 
The two teams traded the first 17 points of the second half, with CCU cutting the deficit to eight at 54-46 with 6:10 remaining in the third period. The Wolfpack used a 13-2 run to take a 67-48 lead with 10 minutes left to play in regulation.
 
The Chants used a 5-2 run to cut the lead to 69-53 before a 12-3 run gave NC State an 81-56 lead with 5:15 left on the game clock. CCU closed the game with a 12-7 run for the final score of 89-68.
 
Coastal Carolina is back home for games against Coker (Nov. 27) and Jacksonville State (Dec. 7). The tip-off is scheduled for 3 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Nov. 27, and 1 p.m. ET on Dec. 7. Both contests will be streamed on ESPN+.
