Bobcats Sweep Coastal on Senior Day

Volleyball honored five seniors in the final home game of the season

CONWAY, S.C. – The Carolina Chanticleers were swept 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-18) by the Texas State Bobcats at the HTC Center in Conway, S.C., on Saturday afternoon, as the Chants honored their five seniors before the match. With the loss, the Chants fell to 11-15 overall and 6-8 in Sun Belt action, while the Bobcats improved to 17-8 on the year and 11-3 in league play.
 
Coastal's Emily Fowler led the offense with 10 kills, and Agata Lesiak and Lauren Malone finished with seven kills each. Jalyn Stout tallied a team-high 17 assists, while Ava Wallis had 13 helpers.
 
Defensively, CCU totaled just six blocks as Dilara Unal blocked four kill attempts, while Fowler stopped two attempts at the net. Sydney Lewis tallied a team-high 16 digs to help the offense get back on track, while Stout (13) finished with double-digit digs, as Stout recorded her sixth double-double of the season.
 
Texas State was led by MJ McCurdy with a match-high 17 kills, while Samantha Wunsch and Jade Defraeye tallied 13 and eight spikes, respectively. Ryan Torres finished with a match-high 43 assists.
 
The Bobcats stopped eight Chanticleer kill attempts with Defraeye and Bailey Hanner making four stops. McCurdy and Alyssa Ortega totaled a team-high 16 digs, while Torres (14) and Maggie Walsh (10) tallied double-digit digs.
 
In the first set, the two teams traded the first 14 points with the score remaining even at 7-7 before a 3-0 Texas State spurt put the Bobcats in front 10-7. Coastal Carolina closed the deficit to one at 10-9 with back-to-back points, highlighted by a service ace by Bailee Earnhardt.
 
A 5-3 run by Texas State pushed the lead back to three at 15-12 before the two teams traded next five rallies as the Chants trailed 17-15. The Bobcats increased their lead to 21-15 with a 4-0 surge before a 4-1 burst by CCU cut the deficit to 23-20, ignited by a Fowler kill and capped by a Bobcat miscue. Texas State outscored the Ladies in Teal 2-1 to pick up the first-set win 25-21.
 
With a 1-0 match lead, Texas State took a 5-4 lead only to see a 5-2 spurt by the Chanticleers to take a 9-7 lead, which included kills by Lesiak and Malone. The Bobcats answered with a 5-1 run to go in front 12-10. The two teams traded the next eight points with the visitors maintaining a two-point lead at 16-14. Coastal responded with a 4-1 surge to lead 18-17, highlighted by a pair of kills by Fowler. An 8-4 burst gave the Bobcats a 2-0 match lead with the 25-22 second set victory.
 
In the final set, CCU raced to an 8-5 lead, sparked by a Lesiak kill and topped off with a kill by Emma Van Elslande. Texas State used an 8-2 run to push in front 13-10 before Coastal battled back to take a 14-13 lead, which included Unal teaming up with Malone and Lesiak to block a pair of kill attempts. A 12-4 burst allowed the Bobcats to complete the sweep with the 25-18 third-set win.
 
Coastal Carolina will wrap up the season on the road Friday-Saturday, Nov. 15-16, in Mobile, Ala., as the Chanticleers will face South Alabama. The opening serve for Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET and 2 p.m. ET on Saturday with both matches being streamed on ESPN+.
