CONWAY, S.C. – Makaila Cange led the Coastal Carolina women's basketball team to a 73-55 win over the Georgia Southern Eagles at the HTC Center on Thursday evening in Conway, S.C. With the win, the Chants improve to 8-15 overall and 2-8 in the Sun Belt Conference, while the Eagles fall to 13-9 on the year and 3-7 in the league play with the loss.
Coastal's Cange finished with a team-high 20 points to lead four Chanticleers in double-digit scoring.
Alancia Ramsey,
Deaja Richardson, and
Arin Freeman added 15, 12, and 11 points, respectively, to aid Cange on the offensive end of the court. Cange grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to record her eighth double-double of the year, while Ramsey and Freeman added nine and eight boards. CCU outrebounded the Eagles 51-46.
Terren Ward scored a game-high 24 points to lead Georgia Southern with Constance Thomas adding 11 points. Ward grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Coastal opened the first period with four quick points as Ramsey hit a pair of free throws followed by a layup by Cange. The Eagles answered with a 6-2 burst before the Chanticleers increased their lead with a 7-2 spurt to lead 13-8, highlighted by an old-fashioned three-point play by Freeman. After a Georgia Southern basket, Coastal made it 19-10 with a 6-0 run, ignited by a three-point jumper by Richardson and capped off by a pair of Cange free throws. The Eagles' Ward scored the next four points only to see CCU's Richardson finish the first quarter scoring with a pair of free throws to lead 21-14.
However, Georgia Southern started the second quarter with a 10-0 surge to lead 24-21. The Chants' Richardson evened the game at 24-24 with her second long-range bomb to spark a 10-1 burst to take a lead that Coastal would not relinquish at 31-25 at the halftime intermission.
The third quarter began with the two teams trading the first 17 points to keep the margin close at 39-34 for Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers increased their lead to 48-37 as
Anaya Barney ignited a 9-3 run to end the third period.
In the fourth, Coastal pushed its lead with a 14-4 blast to lead 62-41, highlighted by seven points by Freeman. After an Eagle 6-2 spurt, the Chanticleers responded with a 6-2 surge to maintain its 21-point lead at 70-49 with 2:30 remaining in regulation. Georgia Southern outscored CCU 6-3 over the final 1:40 for the final margin of 73-55.
Coastal Carolina will return to action on Saturday, Feb. 3, as the Chanticleers honor their two seniors before hosting the Appalachian State Mountaineers. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET.
