Chanticleers Suffer 73-60 Defeat at James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – Coastal Carolina led after the first quarter but could not keep pace with James Madison as the Chanticleers fell 73-60 on Saturday afternoon.

Coastal (8-19, 2-12 SBC) shot 35.0 percent from the field, while James Madison (18-9, 10-4 SBC) finished 40.3 percent from the floor. The Chants committed just 13 turnovers while forcing 15, but were outrebounded 54-33 as JMU collected 21 offensive boards.

Anaya Barney's floater got the Chanticleers started as Coastal Carolina led the entire first quarter, forcing the Dukes to miss 11 of their first 12 shots from the field. Makaila Cange buried a three-pointer to put Coastal up 9-4 at the 5:27 mark before Arin Freeman pushed the lead back to five with a three of her own with 3:06 left in the quarter. Freeman also knocked down a jumper at the buzzer to give CCU a 16-13 lead entering the second quarter.

James Madison roared to life in the second quarter as the Dukes used an 11-0 run to move ahead 26-18 with 7:03 left in the half. Tiara Abron halted the run with a three to spark a 9-2 burst from Coastal that pulled the Chants within a point. However, JMU responded with another 11-0 run and took a 39-29 lead into halftime.

Alancia Ramsey opened the second half with a layup to trim Coastal's deficit to eight, but the Chanticleers never pulled closer as James Madison answered with an 11-1 run and led by double digits the rest of the day.

Cange and Ramsey each scored 18 points and Ramsey led the Chants with nine rebounds. Riley Stack tallied a career-high six blocks and a team-high four assists. Arin Freeman added 13 points on the day.

Coastal Carolina travels to Georgia State on Thursday for a 6:30 p.m. matchup.
