No. 25 Coastal Knocks Off UNCW in Midweek Tilt

Chanticleers to play Illinois, Ball State, and Cincinnati in the upcoming weekend

CONWAY, S.C. – Dominick Carbone picked up his first career win as the No. 25 Coastal Carolina baseball team knocked off UNCW 7-2 in a midweek tilt on Tuesday afternoon in Conway, S.C.

The Chanticleers (2-2) got solid performances out of Josh O'Neill, Carbone (1-0), Cameron Flukey, and Bryce Shaffer from the pitcher's mound as they combined for two runs on five hits while striking out 13 Seahawks (2-2). CCU's O'Neill pitched 3.0 innings, giving up one run on three hits while striking out five batters before giving way to Carbone, who saw 3.0 innings of work, striking out three and not allowing a single hit. Flukey followed with 2.0 innings, striking out six hitters while facing seven.

At the plate, Coastal offense totaled 10 hits with four doubles with Zach Beach (3-for-3, 2B, 2 runs, 1 RBI), Sebastian Alexander (2-for-4, 2B, 1 run, 2 RBI), and Sam Antonacci (2-for-5, 1 RBI) tallying multiple hits for the Chants.

After the two teams traded scoreless innings, the Seahawks struck first as Tanner Thach hit a two-out double to center field to score John Newton from first to take a 1-0 lead. Coastal's offense found its rhythm in the bottom of the fifth as Beach singled to right field before Ty Barrango was walked by UNCW starter Cyle Phelan (0-1). The Seahawks' Luke Craig came in to walk CCU's Blake Barthol, which was followed by an Alexander single to left field to plate Beach and Barrango to give the Chants a 2-1 lead.

Coastal's Corey Zientek advanced Barthol and Alexander with a sacrifice bunt, which allowed Barthol to score on a wild pitch and move Alexander to third. Antonacci singled to right field to easily score Alexander to increase the Men in Teal's lead to 4-1.

The Chanticleers threatened again in the bottom half of the sixth inning as they loaded the bases but were unable to push a run across the plate.

After Coastal's Flukey struck out the side in the top of the seventh, the Chanticleers got back-to-back-to-back doubles from Beach, Barrango, and Barthol to increase their lead to 7-1. Flukey came back to the mound in the top of the eighth, striking out the first two batters before allowing a two-out walk which was followed by his sixth strikeout of the evening.

However, the Seahawks got a one-out single by Bryan Arendt, who was picked off by Coastal's Shaffer on the very next play. Martin Zelenka hit a pinch-hit solo home run to make it 7-2 after a UNCW line out ended the game.

Coastal Carolina will host a multi-team weekend on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Feb. 23-25, with the Chants taking on Illinois (3 p.m. ET) on Friday, Ball State (4 p.m. ET) on Saturday, and Cincinnati (1 p.m. ET) on Sunday.
