Chants Lose to Davidson 18-9 in Midweek Contest

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team suffered an 18-9 defeat on the road to the Davidson Wildcats tonight at Richardson Stadium, dropping their overall record to 1-3 on the season. 

The Chants conceded the game's opening goal after just three and a half minutes of play, as freshman attacker and leading goal scorer Jenna Skibbe netted her 12th of the season. After first conceding, Coastal scored five unanswered goals, two from Sydney McClure and one each from Avery McIlwaine, Abi George and Monica Manley, to close out the first quarter on top 5-1. 

CCU continued their strong early in the second period, as McClure completed her hat-trick to put the Chants up 6-1 with 13:00 remaining in the opening half. Davidson then began to chip away at the Coastal lead, going on a 3-0 run from 10:52 to 3:53 remaining in the second, moving the score to 6-4. The Chants ended the scoring run at the 2:50 mark with a goal from Manley, her second of the night and eighth of the season. The Wildcats put two more on the board on the stroke of halftime, cutting the CCU lead to 7-6 going into the break. 

Coastal struggled to find their footing in the third quarter, as they were outscored by the Wildcats 8-2. Skibbe added another to the home tally with her 15th goal of the season inside of five minutes into the second half. Shayna Brodman, Riley Moore and Riley Cochrane each recorded a third quarter brace, putting the Wildcats up 14-9 entering the final 15 minutes of play. 

In the fourth, Davidson put four more on the board to complete the come from behind win over Coastal Carolina. Since leading 6-1 at the 13:00 mark of the second quarter, Coastal was outscored by the Wildcats 17-3 over the final 43 minutes of play. Brodman, Moore and Cochrane each completed their hat-tricks, resulting in an 18-9 loss for the Chants in their midweek tie. 

CCU's final stats consisted of nine goals on 16 attempts, 13 shots on target and six of those goals coming off an assist. On the defensive end, the Chants swept up 16 ground balls and 12 draw controls to go with eight caused turnovers and 14 of 16 clears attempts. 

McClure finished with a season-high four goals, along with two assists, one ground ball and one caused turnover. McIlwaine and Manley each recorded a brace, moving their season totals to five and a team-high eight, respectively. 

Following the loss to Davidson, the Chants will close out their three-game road trip this weekend with a trip to Elon, N.C. on the horizon, as they are set to take on the Elon Phoenix on Saturday, Feb. 24 at Rudd Field starting at 1 P.M. ET.
