CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's tennis team began its four-match road trip today in Charlotte, N.C. against the Charlotte 49ers in a 4-1 loss at the Halton-Wagner Tennis Complex.
The Chants took an early 1-0 lead after senior pairings Carlos Berna Ruiz and Lucas Wayenburg and Guilherme Toresan and Maj Tomac secured the opening doubles point, defeating Charlotte's Spencer Gray and Alex Richards and Matias Iturbe and Ivan Dreycopp 6-3 and 6-2, respectively.
In singles play, CCU took the 49ers to the third set in four of the six matches, but were unable to come away with a singles win, resulting in a 4-1 defeat. Berna Ruiz, Tomac, Toresan and freshman Juan Cruz Collardin all battled into the decisive set, with two coming up short 6-2 and 6-4, and two left unfinished due to the match's final decision in favor of Charlotte.
The Chants drop to 3-5 on the season following the loss in Charlotte, with a trip to Davidson, N.C. tomorrow afternoon looming, as they are set to face the Davidson Wildcats starting at noon ET.
