STATESBORO, Ga. – Coastal Carolina got 45 points from the duo of
Makaila Cange and
Deaja Richardson as the Chanticleers posted their highest-scoring output of the season in Sun Belt play en route to an 87-81 win on Saturday afternoon.
Coastal (10-19, 4-12 SBC) shot 57.1 percent from the field and scored 53 points in the second half, including 29 points in the third quarter.
Cange scored Coastal's first five points of the afternoon and the Chants led 12-11 following a layup from Richardson at the 4:42 mark of the first quarter. However, Georgia Southern (14-15, 4-12 SBC) closed the period on an 11-5 run to take a 22-17 lead.
Riley Stack led the charge early in the second quarter, scoring CCU's first four points and blocking a shot that led to a layup that cut Southern's lead to 24-23 with 7:21 left in the half. The Chants could not pull even in the period and went into the locker room facing a 39-34 deficit.
Coastal trailed by seven with 8:41 to go in the third quarter before Cange's and-one ignited a 19-8 Chanticleer run as CCU moved ahead 55-51 with at the 3:24 mark, holding the Eagles without a field goal for nearly five minutes. Coastal Carolina maintained the lead through the end of the quarter, leading 63-62 as the game entered the final stanza.
After falling behind by three in the opening seconds of the fourth quarter, Georgia Southern pulled within one point on four different occasions. However, the Chants answered every challenge and built an eight-point lead on
Alancia Ramsey's layup with 2:05 to go. Coastal kept the lead at two possessions the rest of the way as the Chants notched their second straight win in league play.
Cange led the Chanticleers with 24 points and nine rebounds, while Richardson tallied 21 points and four assists.
Alancia Ramsey finished with 12 points and
Arin Freeman netted 11 points, while
Riley Stack recorded five blocks.
Coastal Carolina returns home to host James Madison on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m.
