CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina softball team opened up a six-run lead in the first two innings on Sunday and defeated Furman 8-2 to wrap up the Battle at the Beach at St. John Stadium on Sunday.
Coastal applied pressure immediately, loading the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first before Iyanla De Jesus laid down a bunt single to bring home the first run of the game. Riley Zana doubled the lead by scoring on a fielder's choice and a sac fly by Maddy Jennings gave the Chants an early 3-0 advantage.
CCU pushed the lead to 6-0 in the second frame when Indya Smith smashed a three-run homer. The Paladins got on the board with a two-run home run in the top of the fourth, but the Chants responded in kind when De Jesus launched her own two-run bomb in the bottom of the fourth to cap the scoring.
Raelee Brabham picked up the win in the circle, scattering eight hits and allowing two runs over 6.0 innings of work with six strikeouts. Kaitlin Ryan struck out two in 1.0 inning of relief work.
Coastal will play host to Michigan State, Iona, and Oakland next weekend at the Chanticleer Showdown.
