Chanticleers Drop 52-49 Decision to Texas State

Women’s basketball to travel to Old Dominion next Wednesday

CONWAY, S.C. – Coastal Carolina fought back from a 10-point second half deficit but could not complete the rally in a 52-49 loss to Texas State on Wednesday night at the HTC Center.

Alancia Ramsey and Riley Stack led Coastal (8-17, 2-10 SBC) with 11 points each, while Makaila Cange finished with seven points and six rebounds. Texas State (11-12, 3-9 SBC) used a game-high 20 points from Ja'Niah Henson and nine points and five rebounds from Tiffany Tullis to notch the win.

Coastal held the Bobcats to 20-of-51 (39.2 percent) shooting from the field but went just 2-of-11 (18.2 percent) from three-point range while Texas State made 8-of-20 (40.0 percent) from deep. The Chants won the rebound battle, 35-28, but committed 21 turnovers in the loss.

CCU took its lone lead of the night in the closing seconds of the first quarter when Deaja Richardson's layup put the Chanticleers up 12-11 with six seconds left in the period. However, Henson answered with a three-pointer at the buzzer and Texas State would not trail for the rest of the contest.

The Bobcats built a 10-point lead in the second quarter before three consecutive points from Cange cut the Chanticleer deficit to 27-20 entering halftime. Texas State pulled ahead by double digits again midway through the third quarter, leading 34-24 with 4:47 remaining in the period. Arin Freeman's layup ignited an 11-5 Coastal run that made the score 39-35 as the fourth quarter began.
Two free throws from Ramsey tied the score at 39-39 with 8:37 to go, but Texas State answered with five consecutive points and held a six-point lead with less than 90 seconds to play. Back-to-back layups by Cange made the score 51-49 and the Bobcats missed a crucial free throw to keep the Chanticleers alive in the closing seconds.
Trailing by three, Coastal missed a three-pointer with four seconds to go. The Chants grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled out of a timeout with 0.8 seconds left to play. The first Coastal free throw rattled off the rim and CCU's attempt at a desperation three-pointer off the second miss never materialized as the Bobcats held on for a three-point victory.
Coastal Carolina travels to Old Dominion next Wednesday night for a 6:30 p.m. tipoff against the Monarchs.
