STATESBORO, Ga. – The Coastal Carolina softball team came from behind to take a 4-1 win over the Georgia Southern Eagles on Thursday night in Statesboro, Ga.
With the win, CCU improves to 19-14, 2-5 Sun Belt while Georgia Southern drops to 19-12 and 3-4 in league play.
The Eagles took the lead in the bottom of the second inning when Jess Mazur smashed a leadoff double and later scored on a CCU miscue to make the score 1-0.
Coastal worked the bases in the top of the fourth inning when Sydney Montoya tempted the Eagles into a pickle between first and second which allowed Jay Wrightsman to steal home and level the score at 1-1. The Chants then took the lead when Georgia Hood laced an RBI double to right field to score Maddy Jennings from second base and make the score 2-1.
In the top of the sixth inning, Iyanla De Jesus and Jennings belted back-to-back home runs over the left-field wall to extend Coastal's lead to 4-1. This is the third time in the season that the Chants have cracked back-to-back homers.
Nicolette Picone entered the circle in the bottom of the seventh inning to close out the game at 4-1 and pick up her fifth save of the season.
Raelee Brabham (13-7) took the win in the circle, allowing seven hits while striking out a season-high nine batters. The Moncks Corner, S.C., native also reached her 400th career strikeout in the outing.
The Chanticleers will be back in action tomorrow to take on the Eagles in game two at 6 p.m. ET.
