CONWAY, S.C. –
Corey Zientek hit his first home run of the season in the bottom of the 12th inning as the nationally ranked No. 18 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers walked off Big 10 foe Michigan 8-7 at Springs Brooks Stadium on Friday evening.
With the game tied after 11 innings of play, Coastal's Zientek sent a blast to left field to walk off the Wolverines. After a one-out walk, CCU's
Will Smith (1-0, 0.2IP, K) recorded the final two outs in the top of the 12th to earn his first win of the season.
The Chanticleers (12-2) had a chance to win the game in the bottom half of the 11th inning as they loaded the bases with no outs on a
Blake Barthol double, a single by
Derek Bender and an intentional walk to
Caden Bodine. Michigan's Will Rogers (0-1, 5H, 3R, 2BB, 6Ks) struck out the side to end the Coastal Carolina threat.
The Wolverines (5-9) scored in the first inning as leadoff hitter Mack Timbrook slashed a double down the right field line and scored on Stephen Hrustich's one-out home run to give Michigan a 2-0 lead. CCU looked to answer as
Sam Antonacci lead off with a single up the middle before being stranded at second.
Michigan's Joe Longo gave the visitors a 3-0 lead with a solo home run to left field in the top of the second inning. Coastal put a runner in scoring position but was not able to advance him further in the home half of the inning.
UM made it 5-0 in the third inning when Timbrook led off with an infield single before scoring on a double down the left field line by Mitch Voit, while Cole Caruso scored Voit with a single to left field. The Chants cut into the lead at 5-1 on an RBI ground out by Bodine to score Antonacci.
Coastal's big inning came in the bottom of the fourth, as
Graham Brown,
Ty Dooley, and Antonacci all walked to load the bases. Barthol then launched a grand slam over the visitor's bullpen to tie the game at 5-5.
However, after both teams were held scoreless for the next three innings the Wolverines put the pressure on the homestanding Chanticleers in the top of the eighth, as Caruso recorded his second RBI of the day with a one-out single to score Hrustich from second. Bradley Navarro scored on Cooper Mullens' pinch hit single to left field to make the score 7-5.
Coastal tied it up at 7-7 in the bottom of the eighth as Antonacci singled to right field to score
Jake Books and
Sebastian Alexander, who both reached via walks and advanced on a Dooley sacrifice bunt.
Coastal Carolina will return to action against Michigan for game two on Saturday, March 9, at Springs Brooks Stadium with a 2 p.m. ET scheduled first pitch. The game will be streamed on ESPN+.
