CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team ran its winning streak to five games with a 4-3 win over Ohio and a 7-0 victory over George Mason on day one of the Beach Chicken Brawl at St. John Stadium on Friday.
Coastal built an early lead in the first game when
Clara Hudgens beat out an infield single in the bottom of the third before stealing second and coming home on a
Delaney Keith RBI single. Keith followed suit, stealing second and scoring on
Riley Zana's single.
Keith launched a solo shot to centerfield in the bottom of the fifth to give the Chants a 3-0 lead and Coastal's lead grew to 4-0 in the sixth when
Brie Normandin doubled and scored on an RBI single from Hudgens.
Ohio threatened to send the contest to extras in the top of the seventh by scoring three runs, but Zana threw out runners at home and first to put the game away.
Raelee Brabham (10-2) earned the win, allowing three runs on eight hits with six strikeouts in 6.0 innings of work.
Kaitlin Ryan picked up the save, surrendering one hit in 1.0 inning of relief.
The Chanticleers struck first against George Mason as Keith reached on an error and came home two batters later on an
Iyanla De Jesus single in the bottom of the first.
Keith blasted her second home run of the day in the bottom of the third to put Coastal up 2-0 and the Chants doubled the lead later in the inning as a single from
Ava Hampton plated Zana and
Sydney Montoya scored on a throwing error. Another error allowed
Libby Pippin score two batters later as the Chanticleers extended the lead to 5-0.
Another defensive miscue gave Coastal its sixth run in the bottom of the fourth when Keith led off with a double and scored on a two-out error. Zana capped the scoring with a solo home run in the bottom of the sixth.
Abby Henderson (3-0) limited the Patriots to one hit in 4.0 innings, striking out four and walking three to earn the win.
Georgia Hood notched the save, allowing two hits in 3.0 innings with one strikeout and two walks.
Coastal will return to action on Saturday when the Chanticleers face George Mason at 3:30 p.m. and Ohio at 6:00 p.m. ET.
