CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team suffered a 10-5 loss to Charlotte after a late surge of runs led the 49ers to victory on Wednesday night.
With the loss, the Chants drop to 27-18 overall while Charlotte improves to 26-16 on the season.
The Chants stormed to an early lead in the top of the first inning, loading the bases on three walks.
Maddy Jennings then drove in the first run on a fielder's choice that allowed
Libby Pippin to score to put CCU up 1-0.
CCU extended its lead in the top of the second frame when
Clara Hudgens and Pippin hit back-to-back singles to put runners on first and second.
Delaney Keith then smashed a bases-clearing double to left field to push the Chants ahead at 3-0.
The 49ers flipped the script in the bottom of the second inning when Cori Hoffler and Abigail Knight each hit multi-run homers to give Charlotte a 5-3 lead.
After two scoreless innings, Keith put the Chants back in the game when she blasted a two-run home run over the centerfield wall to level the score at 5-5.
Charlotte answered right back in the bottom of the fifth inning when Ashleigh Washington ripped a two-run single to right-center field to regain the 49ers lead a 7-5.
In the bottom of the sixth frame, the 49ers added three insurance runs on a sacrifice fly, an RBI double, and an RBI single to take the 10-5 victory.
Kaitlin Ryan picked up her first loss in the circle, allowing five runs and five hits in her 3.1 innings of work.
The Chanticleers will remain on the road to take on the Marshall Thundering Herd for a three-game Sun Belt Conference series on April 19-21.
