Blue Jays Sweep Coastal Carolina with 5-4 Win in the 10th

Coastal uses eight pitchers on the night

OMAHA, NEB. – The No. 13 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers were swept by the Creighton Blue Jays in the two-game series after falling 5-4 in 10 innings in Omaha, Neb., on Wednesday night. With the loss, the Chanticleers fall to 27-14 on the season, while the Blue Jays improve to 30-9 overall.
 
Coastal was led by Graham Brown (2-for-4, R, 2RBIs) and Dean Mihos (2-for-3, HBP), while Derek Bender (1-for-3, BB), Caden Bodine (1-for-3, 2BBs, R), and Zack Beach (1-for-4) all recorded one hit each. On the mound, starter Ryan Lynch allowed one run on two hits and two walks before giving way to Will Smith, who pitched a 1.0 inning, allowing one hit and no runs to get the Chanticleers out of bases loaded and no-out jam in the first inning. CCU used eight pitchers with Oliver Ellison (3-1) getting his first loss of the season by allowing one run on one hit and one walk over 0.1 innings. Bryson Shaffer allowed one run on three hits and one walk with three strikeouts in 3.0 innings and Jake Manderson in 0.2 innings, allowed two runs on three hits with one strikeout.
 
The Blue Jays offense was led by Ben North (3-for-4, 2B, 2Rs), Kyle Hess (2-for-5, 3B, 3RBIs), and Teddy Deters (2-for-3, BB, RBI). Creighton used eight pitchers with Chad Saner allowing three runs on two hits and two walks while striking out one batter over 1.0 inning pitched. The Blue Jay pitching staff combined for nine strikeouts with Mason Koch (4-0) getting his fourth win of the year. Reliever Jimmy Burke was the only Creighton pitcher to throw 2.0 innings, allowing no runs on two hits and striking out three batters.
 
CCU's Sam Antonacci led off the game with a nine-pitch walk to reach base in his 41st consecutive game this season and advanced to second on a wild pitch. With Bodine drawing a two-out walk, Brown singled to center field to score Antonacci and moved Bodine to third. Beach plated Bodine with an infield single and advanced Brown to third. In a delayed steal, Brown crossed the plate before Beach was tagged out in a run-down to give Coastal a 3-0 lead.
 
The Blue Jays answered with a Nolan Sailors double to lead off the home half of the first inning followed by a walk to Nolan Clifford to put runners on first and second. Deters doubled to left field to score Sailors and move Clifford to third. Will MacLean walked to load the bases prompting the Chanticleers to make the call to the bullpen. CCU's Smith enticed a grounder to Antonacci who took the force out at home to record the first out which was followed by a pop-up to second for out two. The Chants got the third out on an interference call at third, as the runner interfered with Antonacci fielding the ball.
 
In the third, Creighton cut the deficit to one at 3-2, after Clifford led off the home half of the frame with an infield single followed by a single to right field to advance Clifford to third. Hogan Helligso plated Clifford on a fielder's choice to get Deters out at second.
 
The Blue Jays threatened in the bottom of the fourth after North doubled to lead off the bottom of the inning, Matt Scherrman advanced North to third with a sac bunt before CCU's Shaffer got Hess to pop out and Sailors to strike out swinging.
 
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Shaffer allowed a lead-off walk to Creighton's Clifford before giving way to Parker Cassell, who recorded all three outs to maintain the Chanticleer lead at 3-2.
 
In the eighth, Coastal added a run after Bender drew a lead-off walk and was lifted for pinch runner Sebastian Alexander, who stole second to move into scoring position. Blake Barthol advanced Alexander to third with a sacrifice bunt before Brown hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field to score Alexander and make the score 4-2. The Blue Jays answered in the bottom of the frame after Cuyler Zukowski and North hit back-to-back singles followed by a triple down the left field line by Hess to score both runners to tie the game at 4-4.
 
CCU threatened in the top of the ninth inning as Mihos hit a one-out single to right field and advanced to second on a sac bunt by Ty Dooley but the Chants were unable to take advantage. Creighton had the opportunity to walk off with runners on first and second but Meckley recorded the final out on a fielder's choice.
 
The Blue Jays' North led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a lead-off walk and moved to second on a Scherrman sac bunt. Hess singled to right center as North beat the throw home for the 5-4 walk-off win.
 
The Chanticleers return to Conway, S.C., for a three-game series with Sun Belt Conference foe Troy beginning on Friday, April 26, with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ or can be heard on WRNN 99.5 Hot Talk.
