CONWAY, S.C. – The No. 13 Coastal Carolina Chanticleers were defeated by Troy, 11-4, on Saturday afternoon in the second game of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series at Springs Brooks Stadium.
Troy (30-14, 13-7 Sun Belt) took the lead in the top of the first inning, moving ahead of the Chanticleers (27-16, 11-9 Sun Belt) 4-0 after a three-run home run and an RBI double to chase starter
Cameron Flukey. The Trojans plated five more runs in the top of the third to extend their lead to 9-0. Ohio State turned another double play to get out of the inning.
Coastal loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth and got on the board when
Jake Books scored on
Caden Bodine's sacrifice fly.
Graham Brown followed with an infield single to bring home
Ty Dooley and make the score 9-2, but the Trojans escaped with no further damage.
Zack Beach led off the sixth with a walk and came around to score and trim Troy's lead to 9-3. In the eighth, Dooley reached on a two-out single and scored on a single from Bodine, but Coastal would not draw any closer.
Troy tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the top of the ninth with back-to-back home runs to seal the 11-4 victory.
Brown led the Chants at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two walks and an RBI, while Bodine, Dooley, and
Sebastian Alexander each registered two hits on the day.
Flukey (2-2) suffered the loss for Coastal, surrendering four runs on two hits and three walks.
Dominick Carbone tossed 3.2 scoreless innings out of the bullpen, striking out three without allowing a hit.
The Chanticleers and Trojans conclude the series on Sunday, April 28, with the first pitch scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and can be heard on WRNN 99.5 Hot Talk.
