CONWAY, S.C. – The Coastal Carolina softball team secured a Sun Belt Conference series win by downing the Georgia State Panthers 5-1 on Saturday afternoon at St. John Stadium.
With the win, the Chants improve to 31-19, 11-9 Sun Belt, while Georgia State drops to 11-37, 1-19 Sun Belt.
CCU took the lead in the bottom of the second inning when Brie Normandin laced an RBI single through the left side to drive in Ava Hampton to put CCU up 1-0.
The Chants added another run to the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning when Georgia Hood blasted her seventh home run of the season over the left-field wall to double CCU's lead at 2-0.
Coastal broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth inning with the help of some aggressive base running. After reaching base on walks, Clara Hudgens and Delaney Keith pulled off a double steal and Hudgens came around to score on a GSU miscue to push CCU in front at 3-0. Keith tacked on another run when the GSU catcher tried to throw out pinch runner Ally Wojciechowski at second base, giving Keith time to reach home to make the score 4-0.
CCU concluded the bottom of the fourth frame when Maddy Jennings crushed an RBI single to left field to give the Chants a healthy 5-0 lead.
The Panthers tallied one run back in the top of the sixth inning after a CCU fielding miscue allowed Ashton Schroyer to cross home plate but Coastal held firm to take the 5-1 victory.
Nicolette Picone (6-8) allowed five hits and just one run on her way to her sixth win in the circle and her fifth complete game of the year.
The Chanticleers will be back in action for their final home game of the season on Senior Day tomorrow at noon ET.
