Chants' Season Comes to an End with 24-6 Loss to No. 7 Notre Dame in First Round of NCAA Tournament

SOUTH BEND, IND. – The Coastal Carolina women's lacrosse team's (14-6, 5-1 ASUN) historic season came to an end today with a 24-6 loss to the No. 7 overall seed Notre Dame Fighting Irish (16-3, 7-2 ACC) at Arlotta Stadium in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Notre Dame won the opening draw and proceeded to score nine unanswered goals in the first quarter. The Fighting Irish scored just 25 seconds from that opening draw with a goal from Kasey Choma. Choma would go on to record a first quarter hat-trick, as Notre Dame would jump out to an early 9-0 lead after the opening 15 minutes.

Abi George got the Chants on the board with her 24th goal of the season at the 13:11 mark of the second period. The Fighting Irish would score three more before Coastal could answer with another goal, this one from sophomore Alyson Mascolo to move the score to 12-2. Both teams would score again prior to the end of the half with Sydney McClure scoring her first of two goals on the afternoon, as the Irish would take a 13-3 lead into the halftime break.

Notre Dame would continue their strong play into the second half, outscoring the Chants 7-0 in the third quarter. The Irish improved their lead to 20-3 heading into the final quarter of play.

CCU scored three more in the fourth quarter with senior Maddie Bates scoring her 36th goal of the season, and Sydney McClure and Monica Manley scoring back-to-back goal for their 43rd and 36th goals, respectively.

Coastal ended the day with six goals on 20 total attempts, 13 on target, and two goals coming off free position attempts. Leading goalscorer and All-ASUN First Team selection McClure led in the scoring department with two goals, as Bates, Mascolo, Manley and George each added one goal of their own.

Defensively, the Chants picked up six ground balls, 11 draw controls and forced four Notre Dame turnovers. ASUN Freshman of the Year Evelyn Kitchin led CCU with six draw controls, finishing the season with a single-season record of 86.

CCU concludes the 2024 season with a program record of 14 wins, and by making history by advancing to the program's first ever NCAA Tournament after winning their first ASUN Conference title.
