Game featured a 42-minute lightning delay at the top of the fourth

HATTIESBURG, MISS. – The Coastal Carolina Chanticleers dropped the series finale 6-5 to the Southern Miss Golden Eagles in seven innings on Sunday afternoon as the Golden Eagles swept the Sun Belt Conference series in Hattiesburg, Miss. With the loss, CCU fell to 27-20 overall and 11-13 in league play, while USM improved to 31-17 on the season and 15-9 in SBC action.

Coastal's Caden Bodine (3-for-4, 2RBI), Corey Zientek (3-for-3, 2B, 2R), Dean Mihos (2-for-3, 2 2B, R), and Sam Antonacci (2-for-4, R, RBI) led the offense. CCU starter Cameron Flukey did not factor in the decision, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing three runs on three hits with three walks and a strikeout, while Parker Cassell (1-1) worked 0.1 innings and took the loss, allowing one run on two hits.

USM starter Cole Boswell did not get the decision as he allowed no runs on four hits over 3.2 innings, while reliever Colby Allen (7-2) picked up the win. Allen worked 2.0 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two strikeouts. Ozzie Pratt (2-for-3, BB, 2R), Slade Wilks (2-for-3, 2B, R, 3RBI), and Davis Gillespie (2-for-3, 2B, R, 2RBIs) set the pace for the Golden Eagles.

Both pitchers worked two scoreless before Southern Miss opened the scoring in the bottom of the third inning taking a 3-0 lead. Tucker Stockman and Gabe Broadus led off the home half of the frame with walks before Stockman was caught stealing. Ozzie Pratt walked to put runners on first and second as Wilks followed with a double to center field to score both runners. Gillespie singled up the middle to plate Wilks from second.

In the top of the fourth, Bodine singled to right field before being erased on a double play. Blake Barthol then singled to right before moving to second on a walk to Zack Beach as a 42-minute lightning delay followed and the Chants were unable to capitalize.

CCU's Zientek led off the top of the fifth with a double before advancing to third and scoring on a sacrifice bunt and Golden Eagle miscue to make the score 3-1. Antonacci singled to left center to put runners on first and second with both runners advancing on a Graham Brown sacrifice bunt. Bodine singled up the middle to tie the game at 3-3 as both Ty Dooley and Antonacci scored.

In the home half of the frame, Broadus led off with a walk before getting out at second on a fielder's choice. Pratt singled through the right side to put runners on first and second. Wilks singled to right field to retake the lead before Gillespie plated Pratt to give the Eagles a 5-3 lead.

In the top of the sixth, Coastal's Mihos led off with a double to center field and advanced to third on a single to right field by Zientek. Dooley executed a safety squeeze to score Mihos and move Zientek to second. After stealing third base, Zientek scored on a single by Antonacci to tie the game at 5-5.

However, Southern Miss would retake the lead in the bottom of the inning as Matthew Russo led off with a single before being lifted for a pinch runner. Broadus doubled down the third-base line to score the winning run at 6-5 as the game concluded due to travel constraints.

Coastal will return to Conway, S.C., for a midweek matchup with the UNCG Spartans on Tuesday, May 7, at Springs Brooks Stadium with the first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. ET. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and can be heard on WRNN 99.5 Hot Talk.
