CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team kicks off the 2024 regular season versus the Richmond Spiders at the new CCU Soccer Stadium on Aug. 15 at 7 p.m. ET.
Chant Talk
- The Chants will look to improve on their 3-12-2 overall and 0-8-2 Sun Belt record in 2023.
- Coastal welcomes volunteer assistant coach Paul Saliba to the 2024 coaching staff. Saliba has 15 years of coaching experience under his belt and was a member of Drexel's Hall of Fame-inducted soccer team that tied the all-time single season win record (13) in 1998.
- This is the first of nine home contests that will take place at the new CCU Soccer Complex.
- CCU has posted a 10-11-2 record in season-opening matches since the program's creation in 2000.
- In 2023, nine of CCU's 17 contests were one-goal matches with CCU winning two.
- The Chants have seven international players on their roster and will welcome student-athletes from England, Australia, Spain, Germany, Norway, and New Zealand.
Scouting the Opponent
- Richmond had a 3-11-4 overall record and went 1-8-1 in A-10 conference play.
- The Spiders added nine freshmen and a graduate student to their 2024 roster.
- Richmond has lost its top two goal-scorers but will return Emma Shields and Casey Merz, who each tallied one goal on the year.
- Starting keeper Taylor Montague will return between the pipes. The 5th-year senior recorded a .798 save percentage and made 75 saves during the 2023 season.
History Against
- CCU has a 0-2-1 record versus Richmond.
- The first matchup was in 2009 when CCU suffered a 3-0 shutout loss.
- The Chanticleers battled the Spiders to a 3-3 tie in double overtime during their lone contest in Conway, S.C.
- Richmond took a 2-0 win in its last encounter with the Chants in September 2021.
