WILMINGTON, N.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team suffered its first defeat of the season, 2-0, to the UNCW Seahawks on Wednesday night in Wilmington, N.C.
The Seahawks took an early lead in the sixth minute when Kayla Burroughs floated the ball over the outstretched arm of Coastal keeper Vivienne Carr to put UNCW up 1-0.
Burroughs almost doubled UNCW's lead in the 18th minute when her header narrowly flew over the crossbar.
Freshman Yasmin Azar had Coastal's first chance of the half when she wrong-footed a Seahawk defender and ripped a blocked shot to hold the score at 1-0.
The Chants continued to pressure the Seahawk defense when Tamlyn Parkes loaded up on the outside of the box, but pulled her shot just wide.
At the end of the half, UNCW outshot CCU 3-2 but CCU led 2-1 in corner kicks.
The Seahawks were the aggressors in the opening 15 minutes of the second frame, taking four shots with one on goal while refusing to let the Chants take a single shot.
In the 68th minute, Coastal looked to level the score when Silje Nilsen swung in a corner kick on the top of Camryn McKee's head which shook the woodwork but couldn't find the back of the net.
Just one minute later, Nilsen fed the ball to Rami Rapp to put her one-on-one with the UNCW keeper who made a vital save to keep the score at 1-0.
Coastal's momentum was halted in the 70th minute when UNCW was awarded a penalty kick. Lexi Vegoda stepped up to the spot and drilled the ball down the middle which Carr deflected away. However, the ball fell back at Vegoda's feet, and she made no mistake in scoring on her second attempt to put the Seahawks up 2-0.
Neither team took a shot in the remaining 20 minutes of the match to give UNCW the 2-0 victory.
"Firstly, all credit to UNCW, they're a very well-coached team and were incredibly disciplined both on and off the ball. Although we created some real chances and controlled moments within the game, we unfortunately couldn't capitalize, stated head coach Jo Chubb. "I am, however, incredibly proud of our team's resilience and response when facing adversity. We never gave up attempting to play and create opportunities to get us back in the game. The girls are disappointed, but we must be able to dust ourselves off, reflect, and then switch our attention to a real opportunity that presents itself on Sunday, where we face a top SEC team"
The Chanticleers will remain on the road to take on No. 15 Auburn on Aug. 25 at 3 p.m. ET.
