CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina women's soccer team fell to No. 15 Auburn, 3-0, on Sunday afternoon in Auburn, Ala.
Auburn took a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when Anna Haddock whipped in a cross from a freekick that was mishandled by Coastal keeper
Vivienne Carr to find the back of the net.
The Tigers added to their lead in the 18th minute when Carly Thatcher belted the ball into the back of the net off an assist from Haddock and Shelby Sallee to make the score 2-0.
At the end of the first frame, No. 15 Auburn outshot the Chants 15-0 and led 11-0 in corner kicks.
Freshman goalkeeper
Aris Lamanna entered the game in the second half for her debut while wearing teal and bronze. In the first 25 minutes, she faced six shots and made three saves.
In the 70th minute,
Tamlyn Parkes took Coastal's first shot of the match, but she couldn't hit the mark to hold the score at 2-0.
Auburn pushed ahead to 3-0 in the 79th minute when Haddock crossed the ball to the head of Sammi Brown, who found the bottom right corner of the net to secure the 3-0 victory.
"Firstly, congratulations and happy senior weekend to Auburn's seniors. Their leadership and experience is so valuable to an already very good team," stated head coach
Jo Chubb.
"Today, we knew we were in for a challenge unlike one we've faced so far this season, but we went into the game brave and ready. The challenge to the team today was to be brave when we have the ball and focused and disciplined when we didn't. I absolutely cannot fault their focus, nor their discipline. They left absolutely everything out on that field in a highly contested game and for that I couldn't be more proud of them," Chubb continued.
"In terms of being brave on the ball, I think there were moments where their press stifled us a little bit and that's on me to prepare my team in those moments of the game better. We learnt some incredibly valuable lessons today as we go into a difficult but exciting slate of games. The group is growing daily, and I'm so excited for what's to come from this special group".
The Chants will remain on the road to take on East Carolina on Aug. 29 at 5:30 p.m. ET.
